Exhaust system, general information

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, 1999 Volkswagen GTI, 1998 Volkswagen Jetta, 1998 Volkswagen GTI, and 1997 Volkswagen Jetta. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
  • After working on the exhaust system, make sure that the system is not under stress, and that it has sufficient clearance from the bodywork.
  • If necessary, loosen the double and single clamps and align the silencer and exhaust pipe so that sufficient clearance is maintained to the bodywork and the support rings are evenly loaded.
  • Always replace self-locking nuts.
  • When assembling the exhaust system, it must be aligned in the longitudinal direction in order to maintain the specified dimensions at the pipe joints and the exhaust system is pre-loaded forward by approx. 8 mm (0.31 in.). See  12 ,  15 and  18 .
