Coolant pump, removing and installing: Removing

- With ignition switched OFF, disconnect Battery Ground (GND) strap.
CAUTION:
Obtain radio code before disconnecting battery.
- Disconnect exhaust pipe from flange on Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC). See EXHAUST MANIFOLD, FRONT EXHAUST PIPE AND THREE WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTER (TWC) WITH ATTACHMENTS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Drain coolant, see COOLING SYSTEM, DRAINING AND FILLING .
- Remove poly-ribbed belt. See POLY-RIBBED BELT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Remove Intake Air duct:
- Disconnect Spark Plug cables from Ignition Coil (N152) and unclip them from cable guide -2-.
- Remove cable guide -2-.
- Disconnect vacuum hose between upper intake manifold and Fuel Pressure Regulator.
- Remove Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor -G42- from upper intake manifold.
Detach coolant expansion tank and place to side; hoses remain connected.
- Mount engine support bridge 10 -222A with adapter 10-222A/3.
Connect engine support bridge to lifting eyes on left and right sides of cylinder head and lift slightly to take -up weight of engine.
Disconnect transmission at left rear engine/ transmission mount.
Disconnect engine at right rear engine/transmission mount.
- From above, disconnect engine from front engine/transmission assembly mount.
- Carefully lift engine.
- Remove coolant pump pulley (use VAG 1590 coolant pump wrench to loosen and tighten the mounting bolt).
NOTE:
If necessary modify VAG 1590 coolant pump wrench. See Figure
.
- Remove coolant pump.
NOTE:
To gain clearance for removing and installing the coolant pump, push the engine by hand slightly to left.
