Valve stem oil seals, replacing

(With cylinder head installed)
- Remove camshafts, see CAMSHAFTS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Remove valve lifters (do not interchange) and store with the contact surface facing downward.
- Remove Spark Plugs.
- Set applicable piston to Bottom Dead Center (BDC).
- Mount assembly tool 2036 and adjust mountings to height of camshaft bearing cap studs.
- Connect VW 653/3 compressed air hose in threaded spark plug hole and apply continuous air pressure; minimum 6 bar (87 psi).
- Remove valve springs with VW 541/1A lever and VW 541/5 adapter.
NOTE:
Tight valve keepers can be loosened by tapping lightly on the lever.
- To prevent damage to the new valve stem seals, place plastic sleeve -A- on valve stem.
- Remove valve stem seals using 3047A slide hammer.
- Oil valve stem seal -B-, place it in tool 3129 and push carefully onto the valve guide.
