Valve seats, reconditioning: Notes
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, 1999 Volkswagen GTI, 1998 Volkswagen Jetta, 1998 Volkswagen GTI, and 1997 Volkswagen Jetta. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:
- When repairing engines with leaking valves, it is not always sufficient to recondition or replace valve seats and valves alone. It is also necessary to check the valve guides for wear. This particularly important on high-mileage engines.
- When reconditioning valve seats, remove only the minimum amount of material necessary to produce a perfect seating pattern.
- The maximum permissible reconditioning dimension (maximum amount of material that can be removed) must be calculated before work begins.
- If the measured distance after reconditioning is less than the minimum dimension, the hydraulic valve lifters may no longer function properly and the cylinder head should be replaced.
