Camshafts, removing and installing: Removing

- Set engine to Cylinder 1 Top Dead Center (TDC) marks by turning crankshaft in direction of engine rotation using vibration damper mounting bolt, following the procedure for checking valve timing Repair Group 13.
- Remove cylinder head cover, see CYLINDER HEAD COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING
- Remove Ignition Coil (N152).

- Remove double chain tensioner.
- Remove camshaft cover with Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor -G40-.
- Loosen mounting bolts for camshaft sprockets.
NOTE:
Only counter-hold camshaft with 24 mm open-end wrench using flats on camshafts -arrows-.
CAUTION:
Camshaft jig 3268 must not be installed when tightening or loosening the camshaft sprockets.
- Remove camshaft sprockets.
- Mark double chain before removing (e.g. with paint, arrow pointing in direction of rotation).
CAUTION:
Do not mark chains with a center punch or any similar means!
Camshaft for cylinders 1, 3 and 5:
- First remove bearing caps -1- and -7-.
- Slowly loosen bearing caps -3- and -5-. Alternate diagonally to loosen caps evenly.
Camshaft for cylinders 2, 4 and 6:
- First remove bearing cap -4-.
- Slowly loosen bearing caps -2- and -6-. Alternate diagonally to loosen caps evenly.
