Engine, removing and installing: Removing: Notes

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, 1999 Volkswagen GTI, 1998 Volkswagen Jetta, 1998 Volkswagen GTI, and 1997 Volkswagen Jetta. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The engine is removed by lifting it out toward the front, together with the transmission.

CAUTION: On vehicles equipped with an anti-theft radio, obtain the correct radio activation code before disconnecting the battery.

With ignition turned OFF, disconnect battery ground (GND) strap.

NOTE: All cable ties that are loosened or cut open when removing the engine must be put back on in the same position when the engine is installed.

Remove Intake Air duct and Air Cleaner (ACL) Housing:

Remove poly-ribbed belt, POLY-RIBBED BELT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Remove Spark Plug connectors with ignition cables:

For model years 1996 - 1999, see IGNITION SYSTEM, COMPONENTS

Remove ignition cable guides -1- and -2-.
Remove cover -3- for upper intake manifold.

Disconnect Accelerator Pedal cable at throttle valve housing and support bracket (do not remove locating clip at support bracket).
Loosen hose clamp for power steering reservoir.
Disconnect power steering hydraulic line retainers from engine carrier and transmission.
Disconnect axle shafts and tie them up out of the way.
Separate front exhaust pipe from manifold. See EXHAUST MANIFOLD, FRONT EXHAUST PIPE AND THREE WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTER (TWC) WITH ATTACHMENTS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Remove power steering pump and lay to side.

CAUTION: DO NOT disconnect power steering hoses. See POWER STEERING PUMP, RESERVOIR AND HYDRAULIC LINES, SERVICING .

Drain engine coolant Repair Group 19.
Remove lock carrier with attachments:
See EXHAUST MANIFOLD, FRONT EXHAUST PIPE AND THREE WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTER (TWC) WITH ATTACHMENTS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING
Disconnect 42-pin connector (near Ignition Coil).
Disconnect all wires from transmission, Generator (GEN) and Starter and move clear.
Disconnect all coolant, vacuum and PCV breather hoses from engine.
Disconnect fuel supply and return lines from fuel rail and unclip from retainers on cylinder head cover.

WARNING: Fuel will be expelled. For protection against fuel spray, cover connections with a cloth.

Separate 4-pin connector to Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) (G39)
Separate 2-pin connector to Knock Sensor 1 (G61) on right rear assembly mounting.
Disconnect vacuum hose between upper intake manifold and Fuel Pressure Regulator.
Remove Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor (G42) from upper intake manifold.
