Ground clearance

- Towed vehicles should be raised until lifted wheels are a minimum of 6 inches from the ground and there is adequate clearance at the opposite end of the lifted vehicle.
- Ground clearance can be increased by removing the wheels from the lifted end of the disabled vehicle; an 8 inch clearance must be maintained between brake rotors or drums and the ground.
- Increased ground clearance may be obtained by using a self-loading dolly. Lift the end of the disabled vehicle just as if towing.
- Care must be taken to insure adequate ground clearance when towing over rough terrain or when crossing sharp rises, such as curbs.
- Sharp rises, such as curbs, should be crossed at a 45 ° angle to minimize the possibility of scraping the underbody of the towed vehicle.
