Shift mechanism, disassembling and assembling (vehicles with ignition key removal lock): Notes

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 25 other vehicles, including the 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio, 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, and 1999 Volkswagen Golf. The following list pertains to Fig 1.

  1. Ignition/starter switch 
  2. Locking cable 
  3. Clip 
  4. Selector lever handle 
    • For securing locking cable
    • Always replace
  5. Set screw 
    • 1.5 N.m (13 in. lb)
  6. Cover 
    • With selector indicator
  7. Sleeve 
  8. Cover strip 
    • Insert into cover -3-
  9. Selector lever 
    • Disassemble and assemble, see page
    • Removing: Lower protective plate is removed and front protective plate is removed and pushed forward
    • Installing: Insert locking cable anchorage in notch of selector lever housing
    • Securing harness to selector housing, see Selector lever housing, installing wiring harness .

    • 25 N.m (18 ft lb)

    • 15 N.m (11 ft lb)

  16. Protective sleeve 
    • Insert into selector lever housing -13- before attaching selector lever cable -18-
  17. Nut 
    • 25 N.m (18 ft lb)
  18. Selector lever cable 
    • Do not bend or kink
    • Lightly grease cable eyelet and cable ends before installing
    • To remove selector lever -9-, lower protective plate is removed, exhaust system is separated in front of catalyst (catalyst is removed on 6-cylinder engines and front protective plate is removed.
    • Tighten cable on cable anchorage/selector lever housing to 20 N.m (15 ft lb)
    • Remove clipped lever cable from transmission support bracket, see Selector lever cable, removing from transmission support bracket 
    • Check guide tube for tight fit.
    • Check protective sleeve between console and lever/gearshift shaft for proper seating and secure selector lever cable with corrugated locking element
    • Attaching selector lever cable to selector lever -9-, see Selector lever cable, installing to selector lever 
    • Adjusting, see SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING 
  19. Seal 
    • Bonded to cable anchorage
    • Replace if damaged
  20. Circlip

    • 6 N.m (53 in lb)
  23. Transmission 
  24. Lever 
    • For selector shaft
  25. Console 
    • With cable anchorage for selector lever cable -18-

  28. Corrugated locking element 
    • For selector lever cable -25-
    • Always replace
