WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 21 other vehicles, including the 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio, 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, and 1999 Volkswagen Golf. - Disconnect selector rod -A- and short selector rod -B- from selector lever.
- Open clamp -C-, then remove long selector rod from relay lever.
- Remove two upper bolts (arrows) from transmission bracket at left of transmission.
- Where applicable, remove transmission support as follows:
- Remove bolt (arrow -1-) at rear of left-side transmission support.
- Remove nuts (arrows -2-).
- Remove bolt attaching front of bracket to engine mount.
- Attach engine support 10-222 A and adjust 10-222 A/1 adapters to partially take up engine weight.
- Where applicable, remove insulation shield beneath engine/transmission.
- Remove starter: see STARTER MOTOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Remove front bracket.
- Remove engine mount attachment bolts (arrows).
- Remove large clutch shield.
- Remove small clutch shield (arrows) behind right -side drive flange -A-.
- Remove third bolt (arrow) for bracket at left of transmission and remove bracket.
- Use left-side spindle (of engine support) to lower transmission.
- Where applicable, remove bolts for left -side transmission support and remove it.
- Disconnect drive axles from transmission, removing heat shield (for inner CV joint) from engine where necessary.
- Turn steering to left to full lock and suspend drive axles as high as possible.
- Push engine/transmission assembly toward front and around right-side assembly support.
- Assemble transmission jack with transmission support 3282 and adjustment plate 3282/2 (for manual transmission 020) and support components as follows:
- Place 3282/5 adjustment plate on 3282 transmission support.
- Bolt on support components -A- on adjustment plates (arrow -B- faces front of vehicle). See Fig 7.
NOTE:- The adjustment plate fits in one position only.
- Adjust the arms of the transmission support to correspond to the holes in the adjustment plate.
- Place transmission jack under vehicle.
Arrow -B- on adjustment plate points toward front of vehicle. See Fig 7.
- Align adjustment plate parallel to transmission and lock securing support onto transmission.NOTE: If transmission support 3282 is not available, the transmission can also be removed and installed using the VAG 1383 A transmission jack.
- Remove lower engine/transmission connecting bolt.
- Press transmission away from alignment dowel sleeves and lower carefully.
- Guide right drive flange -A- past flywheel.
- Guide left drive flange -B- past assembly support.
