Transmission housing cover, servicing: Notes

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 21 other vehicles, including the 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio, 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, and 1999 Volkswagen Golf. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The following list pertains to Fig 1.

  1. Clip 
    • For release shaft
  2. Release shaft 

    Removing:

    • Remove clip -1-, cover -8- and clip -7-.
    • Pull out release shaft.
  3. Oil seal 
    • Fill space between lips with multi -purpose grease
    • Extract using VW 681
    • Installing, see Driving in oil seal for release shaft 
    • With transmission installed: replace by removing release shaft -2-
  4. Release bearing 
    • Can be removed with transmission installed
  5. Return spring 
  6. Clutch lever 
    • Fits release shaft in one position only
  7. Clip 
  8. Cover 
    • Always replace
    • To remove, pierce and pry out
    • Installing, see Installing cover 
  9. Oil filler plug 
    • 25 N.m (18 ft lb)
    • Without magnet
  10. Transmission housing cover 
    • Modifications notes, see Note following item 12).
  11. Needle bearing 
  12. - Needle bearing retaining bolt 
    • 5 N.m (44 in lb)

NOTE:
  • Vehicles with 1.8 or 1.9 liter engines: the needle bearing -11- and retaining bolt -12- were discontinued as of transmission number 28 01 3.
  • Vehicles with 2.0 liter engines: the needle bearing and retaining bolt were discontinued as of transmission number 30 05 4.
  • Only transmission housing covers without the needle bearing and retaining bolt are available as replacement parts.
  • When a replacement housing cover is required, the needle bearing and retaining bolt are not to be installed.
