WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) must illuminate until engine has started. (Glow plug indicator lamp also illuminates during glow period when engine is cold)

If MIL does not illuminate with ignition on:

Cause: MIL is not activated or does not light-up due to open circuit. Corrective steps:
  • Turn off ignition.
  • Connect test box V.A.G 1598/22.
  • Bridge test box terminals 1 and 43.
  • Switch ignition on.
  • MIL lamp must light-up.
If MIL lamp does not light-up
  • Switch off ignition.
  • Check MIL bulb.
If MIL bulb is OK:
  • Locate and correct open circuit from ECM to MIL using wiring diagram.
If wiring to MIL is ok
Cause of malfunction ECM inoperative → replace ECM → Diesel Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) Engine Control Module (ECM) J248 , replacing

If Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K83 lights-up with ignition on, continue as follows:

If MIL lamp does not go out:

If no DTC is stored:

Cause: MIL lamp is permanently activated by short to Ground (GND) Corrective steps:
  • Switch off ignition.
  • Connect test box V.A.G 1598/22.
  • Check wire resistance between test box socket 43 and vehicle Ground (GND)
  • Specification: ∞ Ω
If specification is not obtained:
  • Short to GND in signal wire between ECM and MIL.
  • Locate and correct with wiring diagram.
If specification infinity ∞ Ω is obtained and no short to GND can be found:
Cause of malfunction ECM malfunction → Engine Control Module (ECM), replace → Diesel Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) Engine Control Module (ECM) J248 , replacing
