Recommended sequence for adjusting gear set
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Volkswagen R32. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
If shaft bevel gear and head bevel gear have to be adjusted, the following sequence is recommended for maximum efficiency:
1. Adjust shaft bevel gear (S 3 and S 4 )
- Determine thickness of adjustment shim S 4 and insert. This sets pre-load of tapered roller bearing for shaft bevel gear.
- Determine thickness of adjustment shim S 3 " and insert. This secures shaft bevel gear axially, so that dimension from center of head bevel gear to rear side of shaft bevel gear corresponds to installation dimension " C determined during production.
2. Adjust head bevel gear (S 1 and S 2 )
- Set pre-load of tapered roller bearing for head bevel gear via S total .
- Adjust backlash. Select thickness of adjustment shims S 1 " and " S 2 so that specified backlash is present between shaft bevel gear and head bevel gear.
- Check backlash.
The goal of the adjustment is to reproduce the setting for the quietest possible running, as obtained on the test machine during production. Make sure that all installation and measurement procedures are performed with the utmost care and cleanliness to ensure a successful result.
