Selector mechanism, removing and installing: Removing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
- Grease G 000 450 02
Shift mechanisms up to 12.00
- Only if shift cable, selector cable or cable locking mechanism is to be replaced, cable locking mechanism - A - or - B - must be removed using an open-end wrench - 1 - (AF 13).
If components listed above are not to be replaced:
- Pull securing mechanism on shift cable and on selector cable toward front to stop in direction of arrow - 1 - and then lock toward left in direction of arrow - 2 -.
Shift mechanisms as of 01.01
- Remove locking washer - 4 - for shift cable from transmission shift lever - 1 -.
- Remove locking washer - 3 - for selector cable from actuator lever - 2 -.
- Pull off selector cable and shift cable from pin - arrows -.
Continuation for all shift mechanisms
- Remove cable mounting bracket from transmission - arrows - , unclip hose line at cable mounting bracket beforehand if necessary.
- Carefully pry off cover from center console - arrows -.
- Pull off cover downward from center console.
- Remove sound insulation.
- Remove clips - arrow - and pull off shift knob with cover.
- Remove front securing nuts for shift mechanism housing - arrows -.
- Remove rear securing bolts for shift mechanism housing - arrows -.
- Remove bracket - 1 - above exhaust system - arrows -.
- Disconnect exhaust system at double clamp - 2 - and remove with catalytic converter (2nd technician required) → 26 - EXHAUST SYSTEM, EMISSION CONTROLS .
- Remove center and front shielding plates.
- Remove driveshaft → Driveshaft .
- Swing shift mechanism housing down and remove with shift cables.
