WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, 2002 Volkswagen GTI, 2001 Volkswagen Jetta, 2001 Volkswagen GTI, and 2000 Volkswagen Jetta. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

If the EPC warning lamp does not light up with the ignition switched on:

Cause: Corrective Action:
EPC warning lamp is not activated or does not light up due to open circuit.
  • Switch ignition off.
  • Connect Test box VAG 1598/31. Control module is not connected by this action.
  • Bridge test box sockets 2 and 48.
  • Switch ignition on.
  • EPC warning lamp must light up.
If EPC warning lamp does not light up:
  • Switch ignition off.
  • Check instrument cluster.
If instrument cluster is OK:
  • Locate and eliminate short or open circuit in wiring from Motronic ECM J220 to EPC warning lamp using wiring diagram.
If wiring to EPC warning lamp is OK:
Malfunction cause Motronic ECM J220 is faulty.

If the EPC warning lamp lights up with the ignition switched on, continue check as follows:

If the EPC warning lamp does not go out:

If no DTCs are stored:

Cause: Corrective Action:
EPC warning lamp is permanently activated by short to Ground (GND).
  • Switch ignition off.
  • Connect Test box VAG 1598/31. Control module is not connected by this action.
  • Check wire resistance between test box socket 48 and vehicle Ground (GND):
  • Specified value: infinite Ohm (∞ Ω)
If specification is not obtained: Short to Ground (GND) in the activation wire from Motronic ECM J220 to EPC warning lamp.
  • Locate and eliminate this malfunction wiring using diagram.
If specification infinite Ohm (∞ Ω)~ is obtained and no short to Ground (GND) can be found:
Malfunction cause Motronic ECM J220 malfunctioning.

If DTC memory has been erased, the readiness code must be generated again → Readiness code (function 15), generating  .
