Ignition keys, matching (adaptation)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 27 other vehicles, including the 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio, 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, and 1999 Volkswagen Golf. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Insert old (authorized) ignition key in ignition lock.

Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) and select operating mode 1 "Rapid data transfer", switch on ignition and enter address word 25 "Immobilizer".

After displaying control module identification:

Press --> button.

Enter secret number, when doing this place a -0- before 4 digit number (e.g. 01915).

Secret number is located on button fob and is made visible by carefully "scratching off" protective coating (e.g. with a coin).

Two attempts to enter secret number are possible immediately, a 3rd attempt is only permitted after a minimum of 35 minutes if the ignition remains switched on during this time and the OBD is exited via the function 06 "End output".

Press buttons -1- and -0-. (10 selects the "Adaptation" function.)

Confirm entry with -Q- button.

The key in ignition/starter lock is now matched.

Insert next key in ignition lock and switch on for at least 1 second.
Repeat procedure until all keys are matched.

NOTE: 30 seconds must not be exceeded when matching all keys; if ignition is switched off time will not be registered.

Select function 02 "Check DTC memory". If no malfunction is stored, matching keys has been successfully completed.

The following DTC messages are created by matching sequence and can be ignored:

The DTC, "Key not Authorized", will be indicated during complete matching procedure, because during matching procedure it is not permitted to start engine.

Matching ignition keys is automatically terminated when:

Number of matched keys is reached
A matched key is used to switch on ignition again and ignition remains switched on for longer than 1 second (malfunction is stored)
Matching procedure for each key is not completed within specified period of 30 seconds after switching on ignition (DTC is stored)
If during key matching a malfunction is stored.
