Preload of tapered roller bearing for differential, setting (friction torque): Notes

Shaft bevel gear is removed.

- Insert head bevel gear/input shaft - 5 - in final drive housing.
- Install inner race/tapered roller bearing - 3 - to stop on head bevel gear/input shaft.
- Insert a 1.75 mm thick adjustment shim in seat of outer race for small tapered roller bearing (S 2 -side) in small cover - 2 -.
For the initial measurement, an adjustment shim S 2 with a thickness of 1.75 mm is inserted. It is designated as S 2* in the following. After determining backlash, S 2* is replaced by final adjustment shim S 2 .
- Insert small cover and tighten bolts to specified torque.
NOTE:
- For some transmissions, adjustment shim S 1 is located between oil deflector ring and large cover. Here the oil deflector ring must also be removed and a preliminary adjustment shim S 1 must be installed, which corresponds to the thickness of the oil deflector ring, e.g. 0.75 mm. For replacement Part No. Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).
- Assemble large cover with outer race for large tapered roller bearing without O-ring, without joint flange seal and without adjustment shim S 1 and install.
- Press head bevel gear/input shaft in direction of large cover and turn eight times while doing so.
- Press head bevel gear/input shaft in direction of outer race for small tapered roller bearing and turn eight times while doing so.
- Install dial gauge and set to "0" with 2 mm pre-load.
- Move head bevel gear/input shaft up and down ( - direction of arrow - )
- Check play on dial gauge and determine S total
