Cylinder head, removing and installing: Removing

NOTE:

The ground strap must be disconnected for this procedure. Check to see if a coded radio is installed. If that is the case, you must first obtain the anti-theft code.

With ignition off, disconnect battery ground strap.
Remove upper half of intake manifold, refer to Cylinder head cover, removing and installing .
Loosen or disconnect following components:

High voltage line from ignition coil
Ground strap at ignition coil

Position crankshaft at vibration damper retaining bolt in engine cranking direction to marker TDC cyl. 1 - arrow -.
Drain coolant, refer to Coolant, draining and filling .
Remove cylinder head cover.
Disconnect injector valve connector and disconnect vacuum hose from fuel pressure regulator.

Loosen spring band clamps and disconnect coolant hoses from thermostat housing.
Remove thermostat housing.
Remove After-Run coolant pump V51 from its retainer. Coolant hoses may remain connected.

Disconnect three-wire Hall Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor G40 - arrow - ; do not remove sensor.
Remove ignition coil N152.
Remove camshaft roller chain tensioner.
Unscrew camshaft cover.

Loosen camshaft sprockets, however, while doing this, hold camshafts in place with open end wrench.

NOTE:

Use only an open end wrench to counterhold on camshaft - arrows -. Camshaft ruler 3268 cannot be installed when tightening or loosening the sprockets.

Remove camshaft sprockets.
Remove camshaft roller chain track.
Unscrew exhaust pipe front from exhaust manifold, refer to Exhaust system components, removing and installing .

Loosen and remove cylinder head bolts in order indicated.

Install engine sling 2024 A as follows and carefully lift cylinder head with shop crane.

Flywheel side: rail end in position 1
Vibration damper side: rail end in position 8

CAUTION: Use securing clips at hooks and rail retaining pins.

NOTE:

The bracket markers identified with 1 through 4 point toward the pulley.
The bores in the perforated rails are counted starting from the hook.
