Crankshaft seal (vibration damper side), replacing

Extractor hook T20143/1
Assembly tool T10215
Counter-holder tool T10069
Torque wrench V.A.G 1601

Torque wrench V.A.G 1332

Removing

Remove ribbed belt, refer to Ribbed belt, removing and installing under Ribbed belt, removing and installing .

Remove vibration damper. To do this, lock vibration damper with counter-holder T10069.

Place removal hook T20143/1 behind sealing lip of oil seal as shown in the illustration.
Support pulling hook T20143/1 on the sealing flange and pry out the oil seal in direction of - arrow -.

Installing

NOTE:

A PTFE seal (Teflon) - 2 - is gradually being introduced instead of the inner coil spring type seal - 1 -. This has a wider sealing lip. PTFE sealing rings are installed free of oil and grease. If a PTFE sealing ring was installed, only this type of sealing ring may be used as a replacement part!

Before installing, remove oil remains from end of crankshaft with a clean cloth.

Install guide sleeve T10215/1 - 1 - onto front of crankshaft journal.
Carefully slide oil seal - 2 - onto guide sleeve as far as possible.
Press in oil seal until stop using thrust sleeve T10215/2 - 3 -. To do this use an old vibration damper securing bolt - 4 -.

NOTE:

Vibration damper securing bolt must be replaced.
Tighten securing bolt with torque wrench V.A.G 1601.

Install vibration damper and lock with counterholder T10069.
Fasten new bolt to 100 Nm plus additional ¹ / ₄ (90 ° ) turn.
Install ribbed belt, refer to Ribbed belt, removing and installing under Ribbed belt, removing and installing .
