Wheel Bearings & Axle Component View & Servicing (Drum Brakes): Notes
NOTE:
- Careful sealing, absolute cleanliness and precise adjustment are essential to long wheel bearing service life.
- Install clean bearings and add grease only. Do not wash bearings.
- Adjust bearing play carefully.
The following list pertains to Fig 1 .
- - Stub axle
- Contact surface against axle beam must be completely clean
- Do not attempt to straighten
- - Backing plate
- Bolt onto rear axle beam along with stub axle - 1 -
- - Seal
- Fill gaps between sealing lips with grease
- Installing. See Installing Seal
- - Inner wheel bearing
- Drive outer race out using copper drift
- Installing. See Pressing In Outer Race For Inner Wheel Bearing
- - Dished washer
- Large contact surface (concave side) faces brake backing plate
- - 60 N.m (44 ft lb)
- - Brake drum
- Release brake shoe adjusting wedge through wheel bolt hole before removing. See Releasing Brake Shoes
- Coat inside of hub with grease before installing
- - Outer wheel bearing
- Drive outer race out using copper drift
- Installing. See Pressing In Outer Race For Outer Wheel Bearing
- - Hex nut
- Tighten to adjust wheel bearing play. See Adjusting Wheel Bearing Play
- - Cotter pin
- Always replace
- - Grease cap
