Instrument panel, removing and installing: Removing

- Switch off ignition.
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap → 27 BATTERY, STARTER, GENERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL
- Remove steering wheel → Steering wheel, removing and installing .
- Remove center console → Center console, removing and installing .
- Remove bolts - arrows -.
- Remove upper trim - 1 - for steering column switches.
NOTE:
- Unclip front section of trim - 1 - horizontally from instrument cluster.
- Remove three bolts - arrows -.
- Unscrew bolts - 3 - and - 4 -.
- Remove handle from steering wheel height adjustment - 2 -.
- Remove steering wheel height adjustment.
- Remove lower trim - 1 - for steering wheel switch.
- Remove socket head bolt - arrow -.
- Disconnect harness connectors from steering column switches - 1 -.
- Remove steering column switches - 1 -.
- Unclip left and right end plates using a flat screwdriver.
- Unscrew two bolts - arrows -.
- Unscrew two bolts - 1 -.
- Unclip trim - 2 - at top.
- Unscrew two bolts - 3 -.
- Unclip trim - 4 - at top.
- Unscrew seven bolts - arrows -.
- Remove glove compartment - 1 -.
- Disconnect harness connector for glove compartment light.
NOTE:
- If only the glove compartment is to be removed, center console must be removed first because bolt - 2 - is otherwise not accessible.
- Unscrew seven bolts - arrows -.
- Remove reinforcement - 1 -.
- Slide Radio Release Tool 3316 into release slots until they engage.
- Remove radio from instrument panel at release tool grip eyes and disconnect connectors.
NOTE:
- The Radio Release Tool 3316 must not be pushed to the side or tilted during procedure.
- To remove Radio Release Tool 3316 , the side tabs on radio unit must be pushed in.
- Unclip trim - 1 - for Climatronic - 2 -.
- Unscrew four bolts - arrows - for Climatronic - 1 -.
- Remove Climatronic - 1 - and unclip connector.
- Unscrew five bolts - arrows -.
- Remove carrier plate - 1 -.
- Unclip diagnostic connector.
- Using a flat screwdriver - 1 - , unclip seat heater switches - 2 - and - 3 -.
- Disconnect connectors.
NOTE:
- Due to high spring forces, do not use screwdriver to remove control switches for ESP, indicator light and rear window defroster.
- Reach behind the ESP switch using the tip of assembly tool T10034.
- Using assembly tool T10034 unclip ESP switch - 1 - , indicator light - 2 - and rear window defroster - 3 - out of center vent in - direction of arrow -.
- Disconnect connectors.
Only Jetta/Jetta wagon:
- Disconnect harness connector for vent light - arrow -.
All vehicles:
- Press in light switch - 1 - , turn toward right and pull out.
- Disconnect connector.
- Unscrew bolt - 2 - and pull vent out of instrument panel.
- Disconnect harness connector for headlight aim control - 3 -.
Only Jetta/Jetta wagon:
- Disconnect harness connector for vent light - 4 -.
- Disconnect harness connector for vent light - arrow -.
All vehicles:
- Remove three bolts - arrows -.
- Remove footwell cover - 1 -.
NOTE:
- Cover - 1 - can also be secured by the clips.

CAUTION:
Electrostatic discharges can lead to an unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore the technician must discharge static electricity from the body before separating the ignition and ground wiring. This is done e.g. by briefly touching the body or the door striker or pin.
- Disconnect harness connector for passengers airbag.
- Unscrew two bolts - arrows -.
- Lower instrument panel insert - 1 - slightly and pull out from instrument panel - 2 -.
- Disconnect connector.
- Unclip temperature sensor - 1 - and disconnect connector - 2 -.
- Unscrew seven bolts - arrows - (tightening torque 3 Nm).
- Pull instrument panel - 1 - from crossmember - 2 -.
