Airbag system, On Board Diagnostic (OBD) up to 08.94: Function

The Airbag Control Module -J234- is located behind the console on the tunnel. It is equipped with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory. The Data Link Connector (DLC) is behind a cover in the instrument panel, just below the heating and ventilation controls.

The Airbag Control Module detects system malfunctions as DTCs and stores them in permanent memory.

After the ignition is switched on, the Airbag Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) -K75- comes on for about 3 seconds, and then goes out again.

If the Airbag Malfunction Indicator Light -K75- does not go out again there is no voltage supply to the Airbag Control Module -J 234-. For corrective action, refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TABLE  .

If a malfunction exists, the (MIL) -K75 - comes on again.

To troubleshoot the airbag system, use the VAG 1551 scan tool and initiate the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) program to check for stored DTCs.

The malfunction information displayed is used with a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table to determine causes and corrective action.
