Side Bearing Preload & Ring Gear Backlash

  1. Remove oil seals from side bearing adjusting rings. Install adjusting ring on ring gear side of case and screw in until ring is approximately .004-.008" (.1-.2 mm) below measuring surface of case.
  2. Install differential in case, with ring gear on left side. Install opposite adjusting ring and tighten until differential is supported without preload.
  3. Turn transaxle so that differential is at top and install Spacer Bridge (VW381/8) on dowel pins to prevent case spreading. Install a torque wrench on ring gear side of differential.
  4. Spin differential 15-20 turns in each direction while lubricating the side bearings with hypoid oil. While turning, screw in adjusting ring on side opposite ring gear until preload measured on torque wrench is 26-30 INCH lbs. (3.0-3.4 N.m) for new bearings and 3-6 INCH lbs. (.3-.7 N.m) for used bearings.
  5. Measure and record depth to which adjusting rings are screwed in. Mark position of adjusting rings in case. Remove adjusting rings and differential. Rings must be installed on the same side from which they are removed.
  6. Install transaxle gear train. See TRANSAXLE REASSEMBLY  . Install differential and adjusting rings. Turn adjusting rings until marks made during side bearing preload are aligned. Install a Measuring Bracket (VW381/7) on ring gear bolts.
  7. Mount a spacer bar and dial indicator across ring gear end of case. Turn mainshaft until dial indicator stem contacts measuring bracket on ring gear. Continue turning mainshaft until dial indicator shows .060" (1.5 mm) preload. Lock pinion shaft with a clamping bar bolted on gear carrier.
  8. Turn ring gear by hand away from dial indicator until it is stopped by locked pinion. Now zero dial indicator. Again turn ring gear by hand toward dial indicator until it is stopped by locked pinion. The reading on dial indicator is ring gear backlash.
  9. Backlash should be .006-.010" (.15-.25 mm). If backlash not to specifications, screw one adjusting ring inward and the other ring outward by exactly the same amount until backlash is within specification.
  10. Recheck backlash measuring procedure at three other points on ring gear, 90 degrees apart. All measurements must be within specification and not vary more than .002" (.05 mm).
  11. Install new oil seals and "O" rings in adjusting rings if not previously done. Coat outer surface of adjusting rings with an anti-rust preventative sealer. Install new adjusting ring lock plates and tighten screws evenly.
NOTE: Do not tighten left-hand adjusting ring until the clutch housing has been fitted and the nuts tightened.
