Transaxle Assembly: Disassembly
- Mount transaxle assembly in a work stand. Remove separation plate attaching screws and lift plate and gasket from transaxle case. Remove forward annulus gear and 2 thrust washers behind it from case.
- Using a screwdriver, carefully pry large snap ring retaining 1st gear one-way clutch assembly from case. See Fig 1 . Lift out one-way clutch, 1st/Reverse gear brake plates, and reverse planetary gear set as a unit.
- Remove thrust washers, then lift the following components from case as an assembly: sun gear, driving shell, forward planetary gear set, and forward clutch assembly.
- Remove 2nd gear brake band servo cover snap ring. Then using a rubber mallet, tap cover until cover and piston assembly pop out under spring tension. See Fig 2 .
- Loosen 2nd gear brake band adjusting screw lock nut and remove lock nut and screw, then withdraw push rod for adjusting screw.
- Lift out remaining planetary gear set components that are housed in 1st/Reverse gear brake shell. Remove bolt from 1st/Reverse brake spring plate, with draw spring plate and springs, then pull driving shell, brake piston, and oil pump from case. See Fig 3 .
- Invert transaxle so that oil pan is facing up. Remove attaching bolts and lift off pan and gasket. Remove screws from oil strainer and separate strainer from valve body.
- Remove the valve body attaching bolts and lift valve body assembly from case using care not to drop manual valve. Remove attaching screws from accumulator cover plate, then remove cover, spring and accumulator piston. If necessary for parts replacement, disassemble kickdown and selector linkage. See Fig 4 .
