Differential Assembly
- Inspect all thrust surfaces on differential housing, cover, ring gear, pinion gear shaft and thrust washers. Replace all worn parts. Inspect gear teeth for burrs, or excessive wear and replace as necessary.
- Position differential side gears, large thrust washers, dished washers, drive flange retaining bolt nuts and pinion gears in differential housing. Align pinion gear holes with pinion shaft holes in housing, then drive pinion gear shaft through gears.
- Heat ring gear in hot oil to approximately 212°F (100°C). Place differential cover on housing. Install ring gear on housing, then install attaching bolts through cover and into ring gear. Tighten attaching bolts to specified torque.
- If differential side bearings were removed, heat them in hot oil to approximately 212°F (100°C) and press them onto differential housing and cover. Press side bearing outer races into position in side bearing adjusting rings.
NOTE:
If ring gear requires replacement, pinion shaft must also be replaced as they are a matched set.
NOTE:
If differential pinion gear shaft does not fit tightly, replace it with a new shaft.
