Final Assembly Of Transaxle
- To measure play between final drive and transaxle, place a straightedge on transaxle attaching face of final drive housing, and using a depth gauge, measure distance from top surface of straightedge down to edge of pinion shaft oil seal bushing. See Fig 1 .
- Next, measure distance from top surface of straightedge to face of, final drive housing. Subtract this second measurement from first measurement obtained in step 1 and note for future reference.
- Place a new gasket on transaxle separation plate, position straightedge on transaxle case, and measure distance from top surface of straightedge down to gasket surface. Next, measure distance from top of straightedge down to shim surface on shoulder of annulus gear flange. Subtract this measurement from first measurement obtained in this step and record for future reference.
- Subtract the last measurement obtained in step 3 from last measurement obtained in step 2 . Remainder is end play (without shims) between final drive and transaxle. Select proper end play shim(s) to use by finding applicable end play reading in first column of END PLAY SELECTION table, and obtaining shim thickness noted in second column.
- Install selected shim(s) into final drive case, on top of pinion shaft oil seal bushing. Next, lubricate and install sealing "O" ring into groove on transaxle end of final drive housing.
- Install turbine shaft into final drive pinion shaft, then install oil pump shaft into turbine shaft. Position a new final drive-to-transaxle gasket onto transaxle case studs, then mate final drive to transaxle. Install final drive-to-transaxle case nuts and tighten to specified torque.
- Set torque converter carefully on one-way support, then move converter back and forth and insert into splines ensuring that it does not jam.
NOTE:
Transaxle-to-final drive end play adjusting shims are available in thicknesses of .016" (.4 mm) and .047" (1.2 mm). Combine shim thicknesses to obtain total thickness required.
