Direct-Reverse Clutch: Reassembly
- If drum bushing is removed, install new bushing. Install clutch drum hub bushing flush with hub surface.
- Lubricate piston seals with automatic transaxle fluid, then install them into clutch drum with lips facing into drum: Using a stiff plastic sheet to protect seals, install piston into drum using a twisting motion. Remove plastic sheet from drum.
- Position piston return spring plate and springs on piston. Place spring retainer on springs, compress retainer and install snap ring. Install clutch plates, into drum starting with a steel (external splines) plate and alternating lined and steel plates until all clutch plates are installed. See DIRECT/REVERSE CLUTCH PLATE APPLICATION table.
- Install pressure plate and clutch pack retaining snap ring. Using a feeler gauge, measure clearance between pressure plate and retaining snap ring. Clearance should be within .081-.098" (2.05-2.50 mm). See Fig 1
. If not, remove clutch pack snap ring and replace with a snap ring of sufficient thickness to bring clearance within specifications.NOTE: Direct/Reverse clutch pack snap rings are available in various thicknesses from .059" (1.5 mm) to .098" (2.5 mm).
- Install correct thickness snap ring. Recheck clutch pack clearance to ensure correct snap ring has been installed.
