Valve Guide Servicing
NOTE:
Check heads for cracks before performing service work on head. Cracks between valve seats or between seat and spark plug thread are acceptable, according to manufacturer. Cracks may not exceed .019" (.50 mm) in width. Cracks may not extend beyond first coil of plug thread.
- Clean carbon from seats and port areas around guides. Insert new valve into guide to be measured. Tip of valve stem must be flush with valve guide end. Mount dial indicator with tip against side of valve head. Rock valve back and forth.
- Maximum allowable reading (wear limit) is .047" (1.2 mm). If guides are to be replaced, mount head securely with combustion chambers down. Use step drill to remove shoulder of valve guide. Be careful to avoid cutting head or valve guide boss.
- Press remaining portion of guide out with drift from top side toward combustion chamber side. Coat new guide with oil and press in with drift from side opposite combustion chamber. DO NOT exceed 2 tons of pressure as head or guide could be damaged. Using cutting oil, ream guides to size.
