Hydraulic Valve Lifters: Installation

CAUTION: Lifters must be reinstalled in original positions. Failure to install lifters in same location will cause premature failure of camshaft.

Lightly oil lifter body and slide into lifter bore of crankcase. Install replacement push rod tube with new sealing rings at each end. Compress replacement tube and position between head and crankcase from underside of head.
Seam must face up and small end of tube must be at cylinder head end. Release push rod tube and allow it to expand between case and head. Make sure seals seat properly. Install push rods. Make sure push rods seat fully in lifter sockets.
CAUTION: If push rod rides on edge of lifter, initial adjustments will be incorrect and valve lifter will be damaged when engine is started.
Install rocker arm assembly. Tighten nuts down evenly to avoid binding. Hydraulic valve lifters must be adjusted whenever rocker shafts have been removed and installed. Loosen lock nuts and back out adjusting screw until round face is flush with surface of rocker arm.
Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC. Distributor rotor will point to notch on distributor housing. Turn adjusting screws of No. 1 cylinder in until just touching tip of valve stem. Turn adjusting screws in 2 turns (720°) and tighten lock nuts.
Rotate crankshaft 180° and adjust next cylinder in firing order. Repeat until all screws have been adjusted. Install rocker arm cover with new gasket. Start engine and let idle until no lifter or valve noise is heard. Idle should be smooth and engine should have oil pressure.
