Hydraulic Valve Lifters: Inspection

  1. If metal particles are found in engine oil, remove, disassemble and clean lifters. Check lifter face for pitting or excessive wear. If such wear is evident, try to examine lobes of camshaft through lifter bore in case side. Check side of lifter for galling. Check that lifter moves freely in bore. DO NOT  repair lifter.
  2. If damaged or worn, lifter MUST  be replaced with new part. Make sure to bleed new lifter properly before installing. Apply firm thumb pressure against push rod socket. Try to push socket into lifter body. Bleed lifter if socket moves down.
  3. Pry out lock ring. Remove push rod socket, plunger, ball check valve with spring, check valve retainer and plunger spring from lifter valve body. Fill valve body with oil up to bleed hole. Insert plunger spring. Install plunger with ball check valve, check valve spring and valve retainer.
  4. While pushing down on plunger, open ball check valve with scribe. Insert push rod socket into lifter valve body. Put lifter assembly into vise in horizontal position with bleeder hole facing up. Slowly compress lifter, using valve guide or shortened push rod to press against socket. Compress until lock ring can be installed.
