Cylinder Head: Removal

  1. Remove rocker arm cover with gasket. Loosen rocker arm retaining nuts so tension is relieved evenly. Remove intake manifold assembly if both heads are to be removed. Remove intake manifold runners and connected hoses from 1 side if only 1 head is being removed.
  2. Remove expansion tank cap and drain plugs under heads. Drain cooling system. Disconnect coolant hoses attached to head. Remove front and rear exhaust pipes from both heads. Remove push rods and keep in order for reassembly.
  3. Remove 8 cap nuts holding cylinder head to block. Gradually loosen nuts in diagonal sequence from outside to center. See Fig 1. Remove cylinder head and gasket. Remove push rod tubes. Remove metal sealing ring and thin Green "O" ring from cylinder sleeve.
