Crankshaft End Play
- Crankshaft end play is adjusted by shims between flywheel/drive plate and thrust surface of No. 1 bearing. Always use 3 shims to set end play. To check end play of crankshaft, mount dial indicator with tip at 90° to face of flywheel. See Fig 1.
NOTE: Wear limit is .006" (.15 mm).
- Move flywheel in and out, recording measurement. End play range for new parts is .003-.005" (.07-.13 mm) with a wear limit of 006" (.15 mm). When setting end play, install flywheel with 2 shims. DO NOT install "O" ring or rear crankshaft oil seal at this time.
- Mount dial indicator and measure end play. Determine thickness of third shim, using .004" (.10 mm) as desired end play setting. Thickness of shims is marked on shim. Always check marking with micrometer.
- Remove flywheel and install 3 shims. Install flywheel and tighten bolts. Recheck crankshaft end play with dial indicator. Remove flywheel and install new rear oil seal, "O" ring and felt ring in flywheel if end play is correct.
