Crankshaft & Bearings: Disassembly

  1. Remove No. 1 main (thrust) bearing from crankshaft. Mount assembled crankshaft on Crankshaft Holder (VW 801) and clamp holder in vise. Remove oil slinger, main bearing No. 4 and circlip. Remove connecing rods, keeping rods and bearings in order for reassembly.
  2. Place stripped crankshaft in press. Use Press Plate (VW 402) or bearing separator behind steel gear and press off steel crankshaft/camshaft timing gear, spacer and brass distributor drive gear as set. Remove No. 3 main bearing. Thoroughly clean crankshaft and blow out oil passages with compressed air.
  3. Measure bearing journals, using micrometer. If journals show excessive wear, turn crankshaft to next undersize. Check small end bushings in connecting rods. Always replace connecting rod nuts. Check pilot bearing. Remove with puller if necessary.
