Crankcase, Crankshaft, & Camshaft: Crankcase: Disassembly
- Remove engine from vehicle after draining oil. Place on engine stand with sturdy frame head attached to left case half. Remove manifolds, cylinder heads, pistons and cylinder sleeves and engine carrier assembly. Note directional arrows on carrier point forward for reassembly.
- Mark pressure plate position for reassembly. Remove flywheel/drive plate, crankshaft pulley and breather tower. Remove distributor, distributor drive gear, 2 drive gear shims and oil filter. Remove oil pump assembly. See OIL PUMP Removal. Carefully pry out front and rear crankshaft oil seals. Remove oil filler tube. Remove alternator and bracket.
- Remove water pump and thermostat housing as assembly. Remove hydraulic lifters and keep in marked order for reassembly. Remove 10 mm nuts on case through studs. There are 10 mm cap nuts inside cylinder cover portion of right case half. Remove all 8 mm nuts and bolts holding case halves together.
- Separate case halves. Use rubber mallet if case will not separate easily. DO NOT use prying tools or levers between case halves as machine surfaces will be damaged. Oil leaks will occur even if no other damage is done. Lift camshaft and crankshaft with connecting rods out of left case half.
- If bearings are to be reused, remove from case halves and keep in order for reassembly. Remove main bearing locating dowels. Remove metal camshaft plug. Unbolt oil pickup tube and remove.
