Crankcase, Crankshaft, & Camshaft: Camshaft: Installation

  1. Camshaft bearing shells must be installed properly with tabs engaged in case notches. Place camshaft into left case half. Crankshaft should not be in place for camshaft end play measurement. Mount dial indicator with plunger at 90° to face of camshaft gear.
  2. Move camshaft back and forth in case. Maximum end play is 006" (.16 mm). Camshaft thrust bearing (behind gear) controls end play. Bearing set must be replaced if end play is excessive. Remove camshaft and dial indicator. Install crankshaft into left half of crankcase. See CRANKCASE  Reassembly.
  3. Install camshaft in left half of case. "O" mark on tooth at OUTER face of camshaft must be between 2 dots on face of steel crankshaft gear. Mount dial indicator with tip at 90° to tooth on camshaft gear. Rock camshaft gear against crankshaft gear to measure backlash.
  4. Backlash of camshaft gear to crankshaft gear may range from 0-.002" (0-.05 mm). If backlash is correct, rotate crankshaft counterclockwise (opposite running rotation). Camshaft must not lift out of bearings. If camshaft does lift, fit a camshaft with a smaller gear.
  5. Markings for camshaft gear sizes are on INNER face of gear. Markings range from "+5" to zero to "-5". More positive numbers give a tighter fit while more negative numbers give a looser fit. Numbers indicate how much pitch radius varies from standard pitch radius "0" or zero in 1/100 mm steps.
  6. Perform backlash and "walking" checks each time different camshaft is fitted. This is a critical measurement. Crankshaft steel gear is available in only 1 size. Steel gear must be checked carefully for galling or heat distortion.
