Crankshaft & Bearings: Reassembly
- Mount crankshaft and holder in vise. Heat steel and brass gears in oil bath to about 175°F (80° C). Oil No. 3 main bearing and place on crankshaft with dowel locating hole facing crankshaft counterbalance.
- Place heated gears and spacer on crankshaft. Timing marks (2 dots) on steel gear face No. 4 bearing. Only light pressure should be needed to seat gears if heated properly. Install circlip. Oil No. 4 main bearing and install with groove toward oil slinger.
- Install oil slinger and Woodruff key. Put connecting rod bearings in rods and caps with tangs engaging notches. Install connecting rods with forged mark on rods facing up. Match numbers stamped on rod and cap must be next to each other. Tap both sides of rod lightly to keep bearing shells from pinching.
- Check side clearance of connecting rods. Maximum side play is .028 " (.70 mm). Connecting rods should only be replaced in sets of 4 with maximum weigth difference of .35 ozs. (10 g). Install crankshaft pilot bearing with marked side of bearing cage facing out. Lubricate rollers with molybdenum disulfide grease. Replace felt ring.
