Rear Axle Shaft Bearing & Grease Seal: Installation
- Press inner bearing in until seated, using installer tools (VW407, VW472, and VW401). Install circlip against inner bearing. Grease bearing. Grease outer bearing, and fill space between inner and outer bearings with multipurpose grease.
- Install spacer sleeve. Press outer bearing into bearing housing, using installer tools (VW407, VW472 and VW401). Install inner race of outer bearing, using installer (VW240a).
- Install grease seals in bearing housing, using installer tool (VW240a). Press in flush with bearing housing on wheel side and against circlip on flange side.
- Press axle shaft into bearing housing, using installer tools (VW412, 30-100, and VW402). Attach bearing housing to trailing arm.
- Connect axle shaft to constant velocity joint. Reinstall brake backing plate and attach brake line to wheel cylinder. Install wheel hub and brake drum.
- Install axle nut on axle shaft. With wheels on ground, tighten nut to 253 ft. lbs. (350 N.m). Insert new cotter pin. Bleed brakes.
