On-Vehicle Inspection [02/2024 - ]: Procedure

  1. INSPECT ENGINE COOLANT 

    Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION [02/2024 - ]

  2. INSPECT ENGINE OIL 

    Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION [02/2024 - ]

  3. INSPECT AUXILIARY BATTERY 

    Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION [02/2024 - ]

  4. INSPECT SPARK PLUG 

    Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION [02/2024 - ]

  5. INSPECT AIR CLEANER FILTER ELEMENT SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the air cleaner filter element sub-assembly.

      HINT: 

      Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 3

  6. INSPECT WATER PUMP AND CRANKSHAFT PULLEY V BELT 

    HINT: 

    Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION [02/2024 - ] 

  7. INSPECT V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY 

    Pre-procedure1

    1. Remove the water pump and crankshaft pulley V belt.

      HINT: 

      Refer to REMOVAL [02/2024 - ]

      Procedure1

    2. Turn the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly clockwise and counterclockwise and check that it does not catch.
    3. If there is a defect, replace the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly with a new one.

      Post-procedure1

    4. Install the water pump and crankshaft pulley V belt.

      HINT: 

      Refer to INSTALLATION [02/2024 - ]

  8. INSPECT VALVE LASH ADJUSTER ASSEMBLY NOISE 

    Pre-procedure1

    1. Put the engine in Inspection Mode (Maintenance Mode).

      HINT: 

      Refer to INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE [02/2024 - ]

      Procedure1

    2. Rev up the engine several times from the engine idle revolution, and check no hitting noise.
    3. If the hitting noise is confirmed, idle the engine for 30 minutes, and perform the previous check again.
    4. If there is a defect during the inspection, insepct the valve lash adjuster assembly.

      Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 2

  9. INSPECT IGNITION TIMING 
    NOTE:
    • Turn off all accessory switches and A/C.
    • Inspect when the radiator fan is off.
    • Set the shift lever to the P position.

    Pre-procedure1

    1. Put the engine in Inspection Mode (Maintenance Mode).

      HINT: 

      Refer to INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE [02/2024 - ]

    2. Start the engine and warm it up.

      Procedure1

    3. Check the GTS display.

      Powertrain > Engine > Data List 

      Tester Display
      Ignition Timing Cylinder #1

      Standard

      Condition Ignition Timing
      Idle -5 to 15° CA BTDC
    4. When increasing the engine speed, check that the ignition timing advances immediately.
    5. Check the GTS display.

      Powertrain > Engine > Active Test 

      Active Test Display
      Activate the TC Terminal
      Data List Display
      Ignition Timing Cylinder #1

      Standard

      Condition Ignition Timing
      Idle 8 to 12° CA BTDC

      Post-procedure1

    6. None
  10. INSPECT ENGINE IDLE SPEED 
    NOTE:
    • Turn off all accessory switches and A/C.
    • Inspect when the radiator fan is off.
    • Set the shift lever to the P position.

    Pre-procedure1

    1. Put the engine in Inspection Mode (Maintenance Mode).

      HINT: 

      Refer to INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE [02/2024 - ]

    2. Start the engine and warm it up.

      Procedure1

    3. Check the GTS display.

      Powertrain > Engine > Data List 

      Tester Display
      Engine Speed

      Standard Idle Speed

      Condition Specified Condition
      P position 785 to 885 rpm

    4. None
  11. INSPECT COMPRESSION 
    NOTE:

    When measuring the compression, do not allow foreign matters to intrude into the spark plug holes.

    Pre-procedure1

    1. Put the engine in Inspection Mode (Maintenance Mode).

      HINT: 

      Refer to INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE [02/2024 - ]

    2. Warm up the engine, then stop it.
    3. Check for DTCs.
    4. Remove the 4 spark plugs.

      HINT: 

      Refer to REMOVAL [02/2024 - ]

    5. Disconnect the 4 direct fuel injector assembly connectors and No. 5 engine wire connector.

      Procedure1

    6. Check the compression.

      1. Install a compression gauge to the spark plug hole.
      2. Turn the ignition switch ON. (*1)
      3. Check the GTS display.

        Powertrain > Hybrid Control > Active Test 

        Tester Display
        Compression Test
        NOTE:

        Display Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage of Data List and check that the battery voltage is sufficient.

      4. Wide-open the accelerator pedal, depress the brake pedal, press the power switch, then measure the compression.

        Standard Compression Pressure

        Specified Condition
        1200 kPa
        12.2 kgf/cm 2
        174 psi

        Minimum Compression Pressure

        Specified Condition
        1100 kPa
        11.2 kgf/cm 2
        160 psi

        Pressure Difference between Each Cylinder

        Specified Condition
        200 kPa or less
        2.0 kgf/cm 2 or less
        29 psi or less
        NOTE:
        • Check the compression in a short time.
        • While the compression check, knocking or rapping sounds may be heard.
        • When resuming the compression check after releasing the power switch, turn the IG OFF once, return to the (*1) procedure.
        • If no engine cranking after pressing the power switch, perform the K0 Learning Promotion since the transmission may be malfunctioning.

          Refer to DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST [02/2024 - ]

        HINT: 

        Performing K0 Learning Promotion in the Active Test of the transmission is possible to start the engine and check the K0 abnormal.

    7. If the cylinder compression pressure is low, pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder and measure the compression again.

      HINT: 

      • If the compression increases, the piston rings and cylinder may be worn or damaged.
      • If no compression changes, there may be a defect of valve or cylinder head.

      Post-procedure1

    8. Connect the 4 direct fuel injector assembly connectors and No. 5 engine wire connector.
    9. Install the 4 spark plugs.

      HINT: 

      Refer to INSTALLATION [02/2024 - ]

    10. Clear the DTCs.
      NOTE:

      After the inspection, clear the DTCs, check for DTCs again and make sure the normal system code is output.

  12. INSPECT CO/HC 

    HINT: 

    This inspection determines whether or not the idle CO/HC complies with local regulations.

    Pre-procedure1

    1. Put the engine in Inspection Mode (Maintenance Mode).

      HINT: 

      Refer to INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE [02/2024 - ]

    2. Keep the engine speed at 2500 rpm for 2 minutes.
    3. Insert a CO/HC tester probe into the exhaust tailpipe at idle.

      Procedure1

    4. Check the CO/HC concentration at idle and 2500 rpm.
    5. Check the CO/HC concentration following local regulations.
    6. If the CO/HC concentration does not comply with the regulations:
      1. Check for DTCs.
      2. Troubleshoot as follows.
        CO HC Symptom Cause
        Normal High Rough idle
        1. Faulty ignition:
          • Incorrect valve timing
          • Improperly spark plug gap
        2. Valve lash adjuster defective
        3. Leaks in intake or exhaust
        4. Leaks in cylinders
        Low High Rough idle (Fluctuating HC reading)
        1. Vacuum leaks:
          • PCV hoses
          • Intake manifold
          • Throttle body with motor assembly
        2. Lean mixture causing misfire
        High High Rough idle (Black smoke from exhaust)
        1. Restricted air cleaner filter element sub-assembly
        2. Plugged PCV valve
        3. Faulty SFI system:
          • Faulty fuel pressure regulator assembly
          • Faulty engine coolant temperature sensor
          • Faulty mass air flow meter sub-assembly
          • Faulty ECM
          • Faulty fuel injector
          • Faulty throttle body with motor assembly
