Speed Signal Circuit [09/2021 - 11/2022]: Procedure

  1. CONFIRM MODEL 
    1. Choose the model to be inspected.

  2. CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (INPUT VOLTAGE)

    *a Front view of wire harness connector
    (Combination Meter Assembly)
    1. Disconnect the I4 combination meter assembly connector.
    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.
      NOTE:
      • Make sure to perform this inspection with the wheels stopped.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      I4-36 (+S) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 4.5 to 14 V

      Result

      Proceed to
      OK
      NG

  3. CHECK FOR DTC (SMART KEY SYSTEM (FOR START FUNCTION)) 
    1. Connect the I4 combination meter assembly connector.
    2. Check if smart key system (for start function) DTCs are output.

      Body Electrical > Power Source Control > Trouble Codes 

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTCs are not output A
      DTCs are output B

    Result:

    GO TO SMART KEY SYSTEM (FOR START FUNCTION). Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [09/2021 - 11/2022]

  4. CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (INPUT WAVEFORM) 
    1. Check the signal waveform according to the condition(s) in the table below.

      (Combination Meter Assembly)

      Item Condition
      Tester connection I4-20 (SI) - Body ground
      Tool setting 5 V/DIV., 20 ms./DIV.
      Condition Ignition switch ON, wheel being rotated

      OK

      The waveform is similar to that shown in the illustration.

      HINT: 

      When the system is functioning normally, one wheel revolution generates 4 pulses. As the vehicle speed increases, the width indicated by (A) in the illustration narrows.

  6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CERTIFICATION ECU (SMART KEY ECU ASSEMBLY) - COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY) 
    1. Disconnect the I4 combination meter assembly connector.
    2. Disconnect the I222 certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      I222-28 (SPDO) or I4-20 (SI) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

      Result

      Proceed to
      OK
      NG

    Result: 

    OK 

    REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL [09/2021 - 11/2022] 

    Result: 

    NG 

    REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

  7. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CERTIFICATION ECU (SMART KEY ECU ASSEMBLY) - COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY) 
    1. Disconnect the I4 combination meter assembly connector.
    2. Disconnect the I222 certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      I222-28 (SPDO) - I4-20 (SI) Always Below 1 Ω

      Result

      Proceed to
      OK
      NG

    Result: 

    OK 

    REPLACE CERTIFICATION ECU (SMART KEY ECU ASSEMBLY) 

    Result: 

    NG 

    REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

  8. CHECK SKID CONTROL ECU (BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY) (OUTPUT WAVEFORM)

    *a Component with harness connected
    (Combination Meter Assembly)
    *b Waveform
    1. Connect the skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) connector.
    2. Remove the combination meter assembly with the connector(s) still connected.
    3. Check the signal waveform according to the condition(s) in the table below.
      Item Condition
      Tester connection I4-20 (SI) - Body ground
      Tool setting 5 V/DIV., 20 ms./DIV.
      Condition Ignition switch ON, wheel being rotated

      OK

    1. Disconnect the skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) connector.
    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      A151-34 (SP1) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V

      Result

      Proceed to
      OK
      NG

    Result: 

    OK 

    REPLACE SKID CONTROL ECU (BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY). Refer to  REMOVAL [09/2021 - 11/2022]

  11. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (EACH ECU - COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY) 
    1. Disconnect the A47 ECM connector.
    2. Disconnect the I55 radio and display receiver assembly connector.
    3. Disconnect the I234 stereo component amplifier assembly connector.*1
    4. Disconnect the I4 combination meter assembly connector.
    5. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A47-42 (SPD) - I4-36 (+S) Always Below 1 Ω
      I55-27 (SPD) - I4-36 (+S) Always Below 1 Ω
      I234-11 (SPD) - I4-36 (+S)*1 Always Below 1 Ω
      A47-42 (SPD), I55-27 (SPD), I234-11 (SPD)*1 or I4-36 (+S) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      1. *1: w/ Stereo Component Amplifier

      Result

  12. CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (OUTPUT WAVEFORM)

    1. Connect the combination meter assembly connector.
    2. Connect a positive (+) lead from the auxiliary battery to any of the following terminals:
      Terminal No. (Symbol) ECU
      A47-42 (SPD) ECM
      I55-27 (SPD) Radio and display receiver assembly
      I234-11 (SPD)*1 Stereo Component Amplifier Assembly
      1. *1: w/ Stereo Component Amplifier
    3. Check the signal waveform according to the condition(s) in the table below.

      Tester connection I4-36 (+S) - Body ground
      Tool setting 5 V/DIV., 20 ms./DIV.
      Condition Ignition switch ON, wheel being rotated

      OK

      The waveform is similar to that shown in the illustration.

      HINT: 

      • When the system is functioning normally, one wheel revolution generates 4 pulses. As the vehicle speed increases, the width indicated by (A) in the illustration narrows.
      • If the result is OK, an internal malfunction of a connected ECU can be suspected.
      • If the result is NG, an internal malfunction of the combination meter assembly can be suspected.

    REPLACE DEFECTIVE ECU

    REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL [09/2021 - 11/2022] 

  13. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU (BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY) - COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY) 
    1. Disconnect the I4 combination meter assembly connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A151-34 (SP1) - I4-20 (SI) Always Below 1 Ω
      A151-34 (SP1) or I4-20 (SI) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

      Result

      Proceed to
      OK
      NG

    Result: 

    OK 

    REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL [09/2021 - 11/2022]

    NG
