Malfunction in Water Temperature Warning Light [11/2015 -]: Procedure

  1. CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM 
    1. Check if CAN communication system DTCs are output.

      Refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM [11/2015 - 11/2017] , or refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM [11/2017 - 12/2018] , or refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM [12/2018 - 08/2019] , or refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM [08/2019 - 07/2020] , or refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM [07/2020 -]

      Body Electrical > Combination Meter > Trouble Codes 

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      CAN communication system DTCs are not output. A
      CAN communication system DTCs are output. B

    Result: 

    GO TO CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM. Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING [11/2015 - 12/2018]  , or refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING [12/2018 -]

  2. SYSTEM CHECK 
    1. Check the engine coolant temperature hot warning light.

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      Engine coolant temperature hot warning light does not come on. A
      Engine coolant temperature hot warning light blinks or remains on. B

  3. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (INDICAT. LAMP COOLANT HOT) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Active Test.
    5. Perform the Active Test according to the display on the Techstream.

      Body Electrical > Combination Meter > Active Test

    REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (METER CIRCUIT PLATE). Refer to  DISASSEMBLY [11/2015 -]

  4. CHECK FOR DTC 
    1. Check if SFI system DTCs are output.

      Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [11/2015 - 07/2020] , or refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [07/2020 -]

      Powertrain > Engine > Trouble Codes 

      Result

      SFI system DTCs are not output. A
      SFI system DTCs are output. B

    Result: 

    GO TO SFI SYSTEM. Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [11/2015 - 08/2016]  , or refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [08/2016 - 11/2017]  , or refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [11/2017 - 12/2018]  , or refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [12/2018 - 08/2019]  , or refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [08/2019 - 07/2020]  , or refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [07/2020 -]

  5. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (COOLANT TEMP, COOLANT TEMPERATURE) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus:
      1. for Engine: Powertrain / Engine / Data List.
      2. for Combination Meter: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List.
    5. Read the Data List according to the display on the Techstream.

      Powertrain > Engine > Data List

      Coolant Temperature Engine coolant temperature Min.: -40°C (-40°F), Max.: 140°C (284°F) 75 to 100°C (167 to 212°F): After warming up This is the engine coolant temperature.
      HINT: 
      • After warming up the engine, the engine coolant temperature will be 75 to 100°C (167 to 212°F).
      • After a long soak, the engine coolant temperature, intake air temperature and ambient air temperature will be approximately equal.
      • If the value is -40°C (-40°F), or higher than 135°C (275°F), the sensor circuit is open or shorted.
      • Check if the engine overheats if the value indicated is higher than 135°C (275°F).

      HINT: 

      • When the Data List values of the ECUs match, an internal malfunction of the ECM is suspected.
      • When the Data List values of the ECUs do not match, a signal output malfunction of the ECM or an internal malfunction of the combination meter assembly (meter circuit plate) is suspected.

    Result: 

    REPLACE ECM. Refer to  REMOVAL [11/2015 - 12/2018]  , or refer to  REMOVAL [12/2018 - 07/2020]  , or refer to  REMOVAL [07/2020 -]

  6. REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (METER CIRCUIT PLATE) 
    1. Replace the combination meter assembly (meter circuit plate) with a new or known good one.

      Refer to DISASSEMBLY [11/2015 -]

      The operation of the engine coolant temperature hot warning light returns to normal.
