DTC P2182-2A: Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 2 Signal Stuck In Range [10/2022 - ]: Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2025 Toyota Highlander, 2024 Toyota Highlander, and 2023 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P2182-2A)
    1. Read the DTCs.

Powertrain > Engine > Trouble Codes

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTC P2182-2A is output A
DTC P2182-2A and other DTCs are output B

      HINT:

If any DTCs other than P2182-2A are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

    Result:

GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [10/2022 - 11/2023]  , or refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [11/2023 - ]

    Result:

    See step  2

  2. INSPECT ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR (FOR CYLINDER HEAD SIDE)
    1. Inspect the engine coolant temperature sensor (for cylinder head side).

      Refer to INSPECTION [10/2022 - ]

      HINT:

Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing the engine coolant temperature sensor (for cylinder head side).

      Refer to INITIALIZATION [10/2022 - ]

      Result

      Proceed to
      OK
      NG

    Result:

    NG

REPLACE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR (FOR CYLINDER HEAD SIDE). Refer to  REMOVAL [10/2022 - 11/2023]  , or refer to  REMOVAL [11/2023 - ]

    Result:

    OK

    See step  3

  3. READ VALUE USING GTS (COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR1, COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR2)
    1. Compare Data List items "Coolant Temperature Sensor1" and "Coolant Temperature Sensor2" when the engine is warmed up from an engine coolant temperature below 60°C (140°F) to 60°C (140°F) or higher.

Powertrain > Engine > Data List

      Tester Display
      Coolant Temperature Sensor1
      Coolant Temperature Sensor2

      HINT:

Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing the engine coolant temperature sensor (for cylinder head side).

      Refer to INITIALIZATION [10/2022 - ]

      Result

      Result Proceed to
Both Coolant Temperature Sensor1 and Coolant Temperature Sensor2 rise A
Both Coolant Temperature Sensor1 and Coolant Temperature Sensor2 do not rise B
Coolant Temperature Sensor2 does not rise C

    Result:

CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS. Refer to  CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS [10/2022 - ]

    Result:

REPLACE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR (FOR CYLINDER HEAD SIDE). Refer to  REMOVAL [10/2022 - 11/2023]  , or refer to  REMOVAL [11/2023 - ]

    Result:

    See step  4

  4. CLEAR DTC
    1. Clear the DTCs.

Powertrain > Engine > Clear DTCs

    2. Turn the ignition switch off.

      Result

      Proceed to
      NEXT

    Result:

    NEXT

    See step  5

  5. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P2182-2A)
    1. With the engine stopped, leave the vehicle as is for 5 hours or more.
    2. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 60°C (140°F) or higher.
    3. Read the DTCs.

Powertrain > Engine > Trouble Codes

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTCs are not output A
      DTC P2182-2A is output B
DTC P2182-2A and other DTCs are output C

    Result:

CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS. Refer to  CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS [10/2022 - ]

    Result:

REPLACE WATER CONTROL VALVE. Refer to  REMOVAL [10/2022 - ]

    Result:

GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [10/2022 - 11/2023]  , or refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [11/2023 - ]
