Installation [12/2015 - 08/2016]: Procedure

  1. INSTALL SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Apply a light coat of ATF to a new O-ring and install it to the speedometer driven hole cover sub-assembly.
      NOTE:

      Do not twist the O-ring.

    2. Install the speedometer driven hole cover sub-assembly to the automatic transaxle assembly with the bolt.

      Torque: 5.5 N*m (56 kgf*cm, 49 in.*lbf) 

      NOTE:

      Make sure that the O-ring is not damaged or does not jump out of position during installation.

  2. INSTALL NO. 1 TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET 
    1. Install the No. 1 transmission control cable bracket to the automatic transaxle assembly with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 12 N*m (122 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf) 

  3. INSTALL WIRE HARNESS CLAMP BRACKET 
    1. Install the 5 wire harness clamp brackets to the automatic transaxle assembly with the 5 bolts.

      Torque: 8.4 N*m (86 kgf*cm, 74 in.*lbf) 

  4. INSTALL TCM 
    1. Temporarily install the TCM to the automatic transaxle assembly with the 2 bolts.

    2. Tighten the 2 bolts in the order shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 11 N*m (115 kgf*cm, 8 ft.*lbf) 

  5. INSTALL FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET 
    1. Clean and degrease the stud bolt installation hole in the automatic transaxle assembly.
    2. Using an E8 "TORX" socket wrench, install a new stud bolt to the automatic transaxle assembly.

      Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

    3. Install the front engine mounting bracket to the automatic transaxle assembly with the 2 bolts and nut.

      Torque: 64 N*m (653 kgf*cm, 47 ft.*lbf) 

  6. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Set the key at the top of the front oil pump drive gear and put a matchmark on the transaxle housing.

    2. Place a matchmark on the torque converter assembly so that the position of its groove is clearly indicated.

    3. Align the matchmark on the transaxle housing with the one on the torque converter assembly and engage the splines of the input shaft with the turbine runner splines.

      *1 Front Oil Pump Oil Seal
      *a Matchmark
      NOTE:
      • Install the torque converter assembly to the input shaft while keeping it horizontal.
      • Do not damage the front oil pump oil seal.
    4. Rotate the torque converter assembly approximately 180° and engage the splines of the stator shaft with the stator assembly.

      NOTE:
      • Install the torque converter assembly to the input shaft while keeping it horizontal.
      • Do not damage the front oil pump oil seal.
    5. Rotate the torque converter assembly approximately 180° again, align the matchmark on the torque converter assembly with the one on the transaxle housing and insert the groove of the torque converter assembly into the key of the front oil pump drive gear.

      NOTE:
      • Do not push the torque converter assembly excessively when rotating it.
      • Install the torque converter assembly to the input shaft while keeping it horizontal.
      • Do not damage the front oil pump oil seal.
    6. Clean the drive plate and torque converter assembly setting bolt holes.
    7. Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure dimension A between the automatic transaxle assembly contact surface of the engine assembly*a and the torque converter assembly contact surface of the drive plate*b.

    8. Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure dimension B shown in the illustration and check that dimension B is more than dimension A, which was measured in the previous step.

      Standard distance

      B = A + 1 mm (0.0394 in.) or more

      NOTE:
      • Make sure to deduct the thickness of the straightedge.
      • If the automatic transaxle assembly is installed to the engine assembly with the torque converter assembly not sufficiently inserted, the torque converter assembly may be damaged.
      • Do not include the thickness of the set block.
  7. SUPPORT ENGINE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Set an engine lifter.

      NOTE:

      Make sure that there is a clearance between the engine oil pan assembly and engine lifter.

  8. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Apply clutch spline grease to the surface of the crankshaft that contacts the torque converter assembly centerpiece.

      Toyota Genuine Clutch Spline Grease or equivalent

      Maximum grease amount

      Approximately 1 g (0.0353 oz.)

    2. Confirm that the 2 knock pins are installed on the engine assembly and are not damaged.

    3. Clean and degrease the bolt C and installation hole in the automatic transaxle assembly.

    4. Apply adhesive to 2 or 3 threads on the end of the bolt C.

      Adhesive

      Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324, Three Bond 1324 or equivalent

    5. Maintain the engine assembly and automatic transaxle assembly in a horizontal position, align the knock pins with each hole in the automatic transaxle assembly and install the automatic transaxle assembly to the engine assembly with the 11 bolts.

      Bolt A 

      Torque: 64 N*m (653 kgf*cm, 47 ft.*lbf) 

      Bolt B 

      Torque: 64 N*m (653 kgf*cm, 47 ft.*lbf) 

      Bolt C 

      Torque: 46 N*m (469 kgf*cm, 34 ft.*lbf) 

      Bolt D 

      Torque: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf)

      NOTE:
      • Make sure that the wire harness or similar items are not pinched between the contact surfaces.
      • Do not forcibly pry on the automatic transaxle assembly.
      • When mounting the automatic transaxle assembly to the engine assembly, make sure to securely fit the knock pins into the knock holes.
      • Check that the torque converter assembly rotates.
      • When tightening the bolts, be sure that the contact surfaces of the engine assembly and automatic transaxle assembly are in close contact with one another.
  9. INSTALL BELT 
    1. Install SST to the vehicle body as shown in the illustration.

      • SST: 09727-00110 
    2. Using the SST ratchet buckle, tighten the SST belt until there is no slack.

  10. REMOVE SUPPORT BAR 
    1. Remove the bolt from the engine mounting bracket RH.
    2. Remove the 2 bolts and SST (support bar) from the vehicle body.
  11. INSTALL FRONT FRAME ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 24

  12. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR RH 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 12

  13. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR LH 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 13

  14. INSTALL FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 14

  15. REMOVE BELT 
    1. Remove SST from the vehicle body.

  16. REMOVE ENGINE SUPPORT BRIDGE 
    1. Remove SST from the vehicle body.
      NOTE:

      Prevent SST from contacting the vehicle body or windshield.

    2. Remove the vinyl tape from the air conditioner tube and accessory and connecting portion of the unit.
    3. Sufficiently apply compressor oil to 2 new O-rings and connecting part of the air conditioner tube and accessory assembly.

      Compressor oil

      ND-OIL8 or equivalent

    4. Install the 2 O-rings to the air conditioner tube and accessory assembly.
    5. Turn the hook connector in the direction indicated by the arrow in the illustration.

    6. Insert the pipe joints securely into the fitting holes and install the bolt.

      Torque: 5.4 N*m (55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf) 

  17. REMOVE ENGINE HANGERS 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts, No. 1 engine hanger and No. 2 engine hanger from the engine assembly.
  18. INSTALL DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER SETTING BOLT 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 25

  19. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 26

  20. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY LH 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1

  21. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY RH 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 2

  22. INSTALL FRONT AXLE ASSEMBLY LH 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 7

  23. INSTALL FRONT AXLE ASSEMBLY RH 

    HINT: 

    Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  24. INSTALL FRONT LOWER SUSPENSION ARM SUB-ASSEMBLY LH

  25. INSTALL FRONT LOWER SUSPENSION ARM SUB-ASSEMBLY RH 

    HINT: 

    Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  26. INSTALL TIE ROD ASSEMBLY LH

  27. INSTALL TIE ROD ASSEMBLY RH 

    HINT: 

    Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  28. INSTALL FRONT SPEED SENSOR LH

  30. INSTALL FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY LH

  32. INSTALL FRONT AXLE SHAFT NUT LH

  34. CONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

  36. INSTALL NO. 1 EXHAUST PIPE SUPPORT BRACKET

  38. CONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER INLET HOSE 
    1. Connect the No. 1 oil cooler inlet hose to the automatic transaxle assembly and slide the hose clip to secure it as shown in the illustration.

  39. CONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER OUTLET HOSE 
    1. Connect the No. 1 oil cooler outlet hose to the automatic transaxle assembly and slide the hose clip to secure it as shown in the illustration.

  40. INSTALL OIL COOLER TUBE CLAMP 
    1. Engage the 2 clamps to install the oil cooler tube clamp to the No. 1 oil cooler inlet hose and No. 1 oil cooler outlet hose.
  41. INSTALL BREATHER PLUG HOSE 
    1. Engage the clamp to install the breather plug hose to the hose clamp.
  42. CONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 58

  43. INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1

  44. CONNECT ENGINE WIRE 
    1. Engage the 4 clamps to install the engine wire to the automatic transaxle assembly.

    2. Connect the TCM connector and turn the lock lever to secure it with the lock lever.
    3. Engage the clamp to install the engine wire to the automatic transaxle assembly.

    4. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    5. Engage the clamp to install the engine wire to the front engine mounting insulator assembly.

    6. Connect the duty vacuum switching valve connector.
    7. Engage the 3 clamps to install the engine wire to the automatic transaxle assembly and vehicle body.

    8. Connect the ECM connector and turn the lock lever to secure it with the lock lever.
    9. Engage the 3 clamps to install the engine wire to the automatic transaxle assembly and vehicle body.

    10. Install the engine wire and ground wire to the automatic transaxle assembly and vehicle body with the 3 bolts.

      Bolt A 

      Torque: 19 N*m (195 kgf*cm, 14 ft.*lbf) 

      Bolt B 

      Torque: 8.4 N*m (86 kgf*cm, 74 in.*lbf) 

    11. Engage the 2 claws and install the engine wire to the engine room relay block.
    12. Install the nut.

      Torque: 7.3 N*m (74 kgf*cm, 65 in.*lbf) 

    13. Connect the 3 connectors.
    14. Install the relay block cover.
  45. CONNECT NO. 1 RADIATOR HOSE 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 12

  46. INSTALL INTAKE AIR SURGE TANK ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 6

  47. CONNECT NO. 2 WATER BY-PASS HOSE

  48. CONNECT WATER BY-PASS HOSE

  61. INSTALL FRONT WIPER ARM HEAD CAP

  62. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 

    Torque: 5.4 N*m (55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf) 

    NOTE:

    When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected (Refer to PRECAUTION [12/2015 - 08/2016] ).

  63. INSTALL FRONT WHEELS 

    Torque: 103 N*m (1050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf) 

  64. ADD ENGINE COOLANT 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 4

  65. ADJUST AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID 

    (Refer to ADJUSTMENT [12/2015 - 08/2016] )

  66. CHARGE REFRIGERANT 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 2

  67. WARM UP ENGINE 
  68. INSPECT ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 2

  69. INSPECT FOR ENGINE COOLANT LEAK 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1

  70. INSPECT FOR AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID LEAK 
  71. INSPECT FOR REFRIGERANT LEAK 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 4

  72. INSPECT FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAK 
  73. INSPECT SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL 

    (Refer to TEST MODE PROCEDURE [12/2015 - 11/2017] )

  74. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION 

    See step  1

  75. INSPECT AND ADJUST FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT 

    (Refer to ADJUSTMENT [12/2015 - 08/2016] )

  76. CHECK AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE SYSTEM 
    NOTE:

    If automatic transaxle parts have been replaced, refer to Parts Replacement Compensation Table to determine if any additional operations are necessary (Refer to PRECAUTION [12/2015 - 08/2016] ).

  77. INSTALL V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 95

  78. INSTALL FRONT FENDER APRON SEAL LH 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 96

  79. INSTALL FRONT FENDER APRON SEAL RH

  80. INSTALL NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER
