DTC P0011: Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1); DTC P0012: Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1); DTC P0021: Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 2); DTC P0022: Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 2) [08/2015 - 08/2018]: Procedure

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
    4. Read DTCs.
      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is output A
      P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 and other DTCs are output B

      HINT: 

      If any DTCs other than P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

    Result: 

    B 

    GO TO DTC CHART

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE OCV) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Warm up the engine.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1) or Control the VVT System (Bank 2).
    5. Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the Techstream.

      OK

      Operation Specified Condition
      OFF Normal engine speed
      ON Soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON, engine idles roughly or stalls

    Result: 

    NG

  3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Clear the DTCs (Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [08/2015 - 08/2018] ).
    4. Start the engine and warm it up.
    5. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern.
    6. Read the output pending DTCs using the Techstream.

      OK

      No pending DTC output.

    Result: 

    OK 

    CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS 

    (Refer to CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS [08/2015 - 08/2018] )

    NG

  4. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TOOTH OF TIMING CHAIN)

    1. Remove the cylinder head cover LH and RH.
    2. Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with the timing mark "0" of the timing chain cover.
    3. Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing gears and camshaft timing exhaust gears are at the positions shown in the illustration.

      OK

      Timing marks on camshaft timing gears are aligned as shown in the illustration.

    Result: 

    NG 

    CHECK ENGINE MECHANICAL SYSTEM 

    (Refer to INSPECTION [08/2015 - 08/2018] )

  5. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (Refer to INSPECTION [08/2015 - 08/2018] ).

    Result: 

    NG 

    REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY 

    (Refer to REMOVAL [08/2015 - 08/2018] )

    Result: 

    OK

  6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER 
    1. Remove the oil control valve filter (Refer to DISASSEMBLY [08/2015 - 08/2018] ).
    2. Check that the filter is not clogged.

      OK

      Filter is not clogged.

    Result: 

    NG 

    CLEAN OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER RH 

    Result: 

    OK

  7. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY (FOR BANK 1 OR BANK 2) 
    1. Replace the camshaft timing gear assembly (for bank 1 or bank 2) (Refer to REMOVAL [08/2015 - 08/2018] ).

      HINT: 

      Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing the camshaft timing gear assembly:

      INITIALIZATION [08/2015 - 08/2017]

      INITIALIZATION [08/2017 - 08/2018]

    Result:

  8. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Clear the DTCs (Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [08/2015 - 08/2018] ).
    4. Start the engine and warm it up.
    5. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern.
    6. Read the output pending DTCs using the Techstream.

      OK

      No pending DTC is output.

      HINT: 

      DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is output when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will stay registered even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.
