DTC P0500: Vehicle Speed Sensor "A" [08/2015 - 08/2017]: Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2018 Toyota Sequoia, 2017 Toyota Sequoia, and 2016 Toyota Sequoia. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. CHECK OPERATION OF SPEEDOMETER
    1. Drive the vehicle and check whether the operation of the speedometer in the combination meter is normal.

      HINT:

      • The vehicle speed sensor is operating normally if the speedometer reading is normal.
      • If the speedometer does not operate, check it by following the procedure described in Speedometer Malfunction (Refer to Speedometer Malfunction [08/2015 - 08/2018] ).

    Result:

    NG

    GO TO MALFUNCTION IN SPEEDOMETER

    (Refer to Speedometer Malfunction [08/2015 - 08/2018] )

    Result:

    OK

    See step  2

  2. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (VEHICLE SPEED)
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Vehicle Speed.
    5. Drive the vehicle.
    6. Read the value displayed on the Techstream.

      OK

Vehicle speeds displayed on Techstream and speedometer display are equal.

    Result:

    OK

    CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS

(Refer to CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS [08/2015 - 08/2018] )

    Result:

    NG

    See step  3

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER - ECM)
    1. Disconnect the H37 combination meter connector.
    2. Disconnect the A27 ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      H37-35 (+S) - A27-13 (SPD) Always Below 1 Ω
H37-35 (+S) or A27-13 (SPD) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

      HINT:

If the wire has a short, check the speed signal circuit in other systems related to the vehicle speed signal (e.g. the tire pressure warning system, audio system, etc.).

    Result:

    NG

REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (FOR OTHER SYSTEMS RELATED TO SPEED SIGNAL)

    Result:

    OK

    See step  4

  4. CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (+S VOLTAGE)
    1. Disconnect the H37 combination meter connector.

      HINT:

Disconnect the ECU connectors for the other systems related to the speed signal (but the ECM connectors must be connected).

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage

Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      H37-35 (+S) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 4.5 to 5.5 V

      HINT:

A voltage of 5 or 12 V is output from each ECU and then input to the combination meter assembly.

    Result:

    NG

    REPLACE ECM

    (Refer to REMOVAL [08/2015 - 08/2018] )

    Result:

    OK

    See step  5

  5. CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (SPD SIGNAL OUTPUT WAVEFORM)
    1. Move the shift lever to the neutral position.
    2. Jack up the vehicle.
    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    4. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      H37-35 (+S) - Body ground
      • Ignition switch ON
      • Wheel is turned slowly
      Voltage generated intermittently
      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      NG A
      OK B

      HINT:

      • The output voltage should fluctuate up and down, similarly to the diagram, when a wheel is turned slowly.
      • A voltage of 5 or 12 V is output from each ECU and then input to the combination meter assembly.

    Result:

    REPLACE ECM

    (Refer to REMOVAL [08/2015 - 08/2018] )

    Result:

    See step  6

  6. CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (SPD SIGNAL INPUT WAVEFORM)
    1. Move the shift lever to the neutral position.
    2. Jack up the vehicle.
