Fail-Safe Chart [12/2013 - 11/2016]

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2016 Toyota Highlander, 2015 Toyota Highlander, and 2014 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Constant speed control mode and vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode:

If any of the following auto cancel conditions are detected while the dynamic radar cruise control system is controlling vehicle speed, the system clears the stored vehicle speed and cancels control of vehicle speed by the dynamic radar cruise control system.

Vehicle Condition Auto Cancel Condition Fail-safe Deactivation Condition
    • Cruise control indicator (constant speed control mode) or Cruise control indicator (vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode) goes out
    • A warning message "CHECK CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM" is displayed
    • "Pong" warning sound is heard*
    • Open or short in stop light switch circuit
    • Problem with vehicle speed signal
Dynamic radar cruise control system is turned off and back on again using the cruise control main switch (ON-OFF button).
    • Cruise control indicator (constant speed control mode) or Cruise control indicator (vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode) goes out
    • A warning message "CHECK CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM" is displayed
    • "Pong" warning sound is heard
    • Malfunction in the stop light switch input circuit
    • Malfunction in the cruise control main switch cancel circuit
    Engine switch is turned off.
Cruise control indicator (constant speed control mode) or cruise control indicator (vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode) is on Malfunction in the throttle position sensor and motor Dynamic radar cruise control system is turned off and back on again using the cruise control main switch (ON-OFF button).

    (1) *: Only in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode

  2. Vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode:

If any of the following auto cancel conditions are detected while the dynamic radar cruise control system is controlling vehicle speed, the system clears the stored vehicle speed and cancels control of vehicle speed by the dynamic radar cruise control system.

Vehicle Condition Auto Cancel Condition Fail-safe Deactivation Condition
    • Cruise control indicator (vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode) goes out
    • A warning message "CHECK CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM" is displayed
    • "Pong" warning sound is heard
    • Malfunction in the millimeter wave radar sensor assembly
    • Beam axis of millimeter wave radar sensor assembly deviates
    • Problem with stop light switch input circuit
    • Problem with cruise control main switch cancel circuit
    • CAN communication error between dynamic radar cruise control system related sensors and ECUs*
Engine switch is turned off and back on (IG) again.

    (1) *: For details, refer to CAN communication system section.

  3. Vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode:

If any of the following auto cancel conditions are detected while the dynamic radar cruise control system is controlling vehicle speed, the system maintains the stored vehicle speed in memory and cancels control of vehicle speed by the dynamic radar cruise control system.

Vehicle Condition Auto Cancel Condition Fail-safe Deactivation Condition
    • Cruise control indicator (vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode) goes out
    • A warning message "CLEAN RADAR SENSOR" is displayed
    • "Pong" warning sound is heard
There is dirt on millimeter wave radar sensor assembly Dynamic radar cruise control system is turned off and back on again using the cruise control main switch (ON-OFF button).
    • Cruise control indicator (vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode) goes out
    • A warning message "CRUISE CONTROL NOT AVAILABLE" is displayed
    • "Pong" warning sound is heard
    • Wipers operating on HI
    • Millimeter wave radar sensor assembly sensitivity reduced because of bad weather such as rain, fog, snow, or sandstorm
  4. Constant speed control mode:

If the following auto cancel condition is detected while the dynamic radar cruise control system is controlling vehicle speed, the system clears the stored vehicle speed and cancels control of vehicle speed by the dynamic radar cruise control system.

Vehicle Condition Auto Cancel Condition Fail-safe Deactivation Condition
Cruise control indicator (constant speed control mode) is on Vehicle speed is lower than stored vehicle speed by approximately 16 km/h (10 mph) or more Cruise control main switch is pushed -/SET
  5. Constant speed control mode and vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode:

If the following auto cancel condition is detected while the dynamic radar cruise control system is controlling vehicle speed, the system maintains the stored vehicle speed in memory and cancels control of vehicle speed by the dynamic radar cruise control system.

Vehicle Condition Auto Cancel Condition Fail-safe Deactivation Condition
Cruise control indicator (constant speed control mode) or cruise control indicator (vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode) is on Vehicle speed is lower than low speed limit (approximately 40 km/h (25 mph)) while driving with dynamic radar cruise control system controlling vehicle speed Push the cruise control main switch to +/RES
