On-Vehicle Inspection [12/2013 - 11/2016]: Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2016 Toyota Highlander, 2015 Toyota Highlander, and 2014 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. CHECK COOLING FAN SYSTEM
    1. Check and ensure the following conditions:
      1. The ignition switch is off.
      2. The engine coolant temperature is less than 95°C (203°F).
      3. The battery voltage is between 11 to 14 V.
      4. The A/C switch is off.
    2. Connect the pickup of a clamp-on ammeter around one of the 2 wires for the cooling fan motor.
    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and wait for approximately 10 seconds. Check that the fan is not operating.
    4. Start the engine. Check that the fan is not operating with the engine idling.

      HINT:

      • Make sure that the engine coolant temperature is less than 95°C (203°F).
      • Turn the A/C switch off.
    5. Check that the fan operates when the A/C switch is turned on.
    6. Measure the current while the cooling fan motor is turning.

      Standard Current

Item Condition Motor Type Specified Condition
      Cooling fan motor Battery voltage applied at 20°C (68°F) for 100 W Type 13.6 to 19.6 A
      for 200 W Type 26.0 to 32.0 A
      No. 2 cooling fan motor for 100 W Type 13.6 to 19.6 A
      for 200 W Type 26.0 to 32.0 A

      HINT:

The engine coolant temperature should be less than 95°C (203°F).

    7. Check that the fan operates when the water temperature sensor connector is disconnected.
    8. Measure the current while the cooling fan motor is turning.

      Standard Current

Item Condition Motor Type Specified Condition
      Cooling fan motor Battery voltage applied at 20°C (68°F) for 100 W Type 13.6 to 19.6 A
      for 200 W Type 26.0 to 32.0 A
      No. 2 cooling fan motor for 100 W Type 13.6 to 19.6 A
      for 200 W Type 26.0 to 32.0 A
    9. After the engine is warmed up, check that the fan operates as shown in the illustration.

      HINT:

      • The engine coolant temperature at which the fan starts operating is approximately 97°C (207°F).
      • This system can also be checked using the Techstream.
