DTC P0014: Camshaft Position "B" - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1); DTC P0015: Camshaft Position "B" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1) [11/2016 - ]: Procedure

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0014 OR P0015) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
    5. Read the DTCs.

      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Trouble Codes 

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTC P0014 or P0015 is output A
      DTC P0014 or P0015 and other DTCs are output B

      HINT: 

      If any DTCs other than P0014 or P0015 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

    Result:  2

    B 

    GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [11/2016 - 10/2017]  Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [10/2017 - ]

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (CONTROL THE VVT EXHAUST LINEAR) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Turn the A/C switch on.
    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank1).

      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Active Test 

      Tester Display
      Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank1)
    6. Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft) using the Techstream.

      OK

      Techstream Operation Engine Condition
      0% Normal engine speed
      100% Engine idles roughly or stalls

      HINT: 

      • Refer to "Data List / Active Test" [VVT Ex OCV Duty #1 and VVT Ex Chg Angle #1].

        Refer to DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST [11/2016 - ]

      • If the result is not acceptable, cool the engine (engine coolant temperature is 50°C (122°F) or less) and perform the Active Test again.

  3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0014 OR P0015) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear the DTCs.

      Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [11/2016 - ]

      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Clear DTCs 

    5. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
    6. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    7. Turn the Techstream on.
    8. Start the engine and warm it up.
    9. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern.
    10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes / Pending.
    11. Read the pending DTCs.

      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Trouble Codes 

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTCs are not output A
      DTC P0014 or P0015 is output B

      HINT: 

      DTC P0014 or P0015 may be stored when foreign matter in the engine oil is caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. This foreign matter may then be captured by the oil filter.

  4. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT) 
    1. Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft).

      Refer to INSPECTION [12/2013 - ]

      Result

    REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT). Refer to  REMOVAL [12/2013 - ]

  5. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE TIMING CHAIN AND JUMPED TEETH)

  6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER

  7. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING EXHAUST GEAR ASSEMBLY 
    1. Replace the camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly.

      Refer to REMOVAL [11/2016 - ]

      HINT: 

      Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing the camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly.

      Refer to INITIALIZATION [12/2013 - ]

  8. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0014 OR P0015) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.

      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Clear DTCs 

    5. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

  9. CHECK ENGINE MECHANICAL SYSTEM 
    1. Check for mechanical malfunctions that affect the valve timing, such as a jumped tooth or stretching of the timing chain.
