On-Vehicle Inspection [08/2013 - ]: Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. CHECK COOLING FAN SYSTEM
    1. Check and ensure the following conditions:
      1. The ignition switch is off.
      2. The coolant temperature is less than 96°C (205°F).
      3. The battery voltage is between 11 to 14 V.
      4. The A/C switch is off.
    2. Connect the pickup of a clamp-on ammeter over one of the 2 wires for the cooling fan motor.
    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and wait for approximately 10 seconds. Check that the fan is not operating.
    4. Start the engine. Check that the fan is not operating with the engine idling.

      HINT:

      • Make sure that the radiator coolant temperature is less than 96°C (205°F).
      • Turn the A/C switch off.
    5. Check that the fan operates when the A/C switch is turned on.
    6. Measure the current while the cooling fan motor is turning.

      Standard Current

      Item Condition Specified Condition
Cooling fan motor Battery voltage applied at 20°C (68°F) 7.4 to 10.9 A

      HINT:

The coolant temperature should be less than 96°C (205°F).

    7. Check that the fan operates when the water temperature sensor connector is disconnected.
    8. Measure the current while the cooling fan motor is turning.

      Standard Current

      Item Condition Specified Condition
Cooling fan motor Battery voltage applied at 20°C (68°F) 7.4 to 10.9 A
    9. After the engine is warmed up, check that the fan operates as shown in the illustration below.

      HINT:

      • The coolant temperature at which the fan starts operating is approximately 98°C (208°F).
      • This system can also be checked using the Techstream.
