Inspection [08/2019 - ]: Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. TRANSFER SYSTEM 
    NOTE:
    • To shift from H2 to H4, move the transfer shift lever while keeping the wheels facing straight ahead.
    • To shift from H4 to L4, stop the vehicle, move the shift lever to N and then move the transfer shift lever.
    • To shift from L4 to H4, stop the vehicle, move the shift lever to N and then move the transfer shift lever.
  2. INSPECT INDICATOR LIGHT 
    1. 4WD Indicator Light:
      1. Start the engine.
      2. Move the transfer shift lever from the H2 position to the H4, L4 or N position.
      3. Check that the 4WD indicator light illuminates.

        OK

        4WD indicator light comes on or 4WD indicator light comes on after blinking.

        If the result is not as specified, inspect the transfer indicator switch (4WD position) and 4 wheel drive control ECU. If the system is normal, there may be a malfunction in the CAN communication system or combination meter. In this case, first check the CAN communication system.

        Refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM [08/2019 - 08/2021] , or refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM [08/2021 - 08/2022] , or refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM [08/2022 - ]

        Then check the combination meter.

        Refer to PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE [08/2019 - ]

    2. 4LO Indicator Light:
      1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
      2. Move the shift lever to N (vehicle is stopped).
      3. Move the transfer shift lever from the H2, H4 or N position to the L4 position.
      4. Check the 4LO indicator light.

        OK

        4LO indicator light comes on or 4LO indicator light comes on after blinking.

        If the result is not as specified, inspect the transfer indicator switch (L4 position) and 4 wheel drive control ECU. If the system is normal, there may be a malfunction in the CAN communication system or combination meter. In this case, first check the CAN communication system.

        Refer to PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE [08/2019 - 08/2021] , or refer to PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE [08/2021 - 08/2022] , or refer to PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE [08/2022 - ]

        Then check the combination meter.

        Refer to PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE [08/2019 - ]

  3. INSPECT 4 WHEEL DRIVE CONTROL ECU (POWER SUPPLY) 
    1. Check the harness and connector (4 wheel drive control ECU - battery and body ground).
      1. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Voltage

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        F47-21 (+B) - Body ground Always 11 to 14 V
        F46-4 (IG) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V

        *a Component with harness connected
        (4 Wheel Drive Control ECU)

        If the result is not as specified, inspect the fuse, harness or connector. If the harness or connector is malfunctioning, repair or replace the harness or connector. If the harness or connector is normal, replace the 4 wheel drive control ECU.

        Refer to REMOVAL [08/2015 - ]

      2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        F46-10 (GND) - Body ground Always Below 1 Ω

        If the result is not as specified, repair or replace the harness, fuse or connector.

  4. INSPECT TRANSFER INDICATOR SWITCH 
    1. Check the harness and connector (transfer indicator switch - 4 wheel drive control ECU).
      1. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Voltage

        Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
        F47-3 (4WDL) - Body ground Ignition switch ON
        Transfer shift lever position H2 or H4
        9.5 to 14 V
        Ignition switch ON
        Transfer shift lever position L4 or N
        Below 1.5 V
        F47-6 (4WD) - Body ground Ignition switch ON
        Transfer shift lever position H2
        9.5 to 14 V
        Ignition switch ON
        Transfer shift lever position H4, L4 or N
        Below 1.5 V
        F47-12 (NP) - Body ground Ignition switch ON
        Transfer shift lever position N
        Below 1.5 V
        Ignition switch ON
        Transfer shift lever position not N
        9.5 to 14 V

        If the result is not as specified, check the power supply. If the power supply is normal, inspect the transfer indicator switch.

        Refer to REMOVAL [08/2015 - ]

    2. Check the transfer indicator switch (4WD position).

      1. Disconnect the B44 transfer indicator switch (4WD position) connector.
      2. Disconnect the F47 4 wheel drive control ECU connector.
      3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        B44-2 - F47-6 (4WD) Always Below 1 Ω
        B44-2 or F47-6 (4WD) - Body ground Always 100 kΩ or higher

        (to Transfer Indicator Switch (4WD Position))

        If the result is not as specified, repair or replace the harness or connector.

    3. Check the transfer indicator switch (L4 position).

      1. Disconnect the B45 transfer indicator switch (L4 position) connector.
      2. Disconnect the F47 4 wheel drive control ECU connector.
      3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        B45-1 - F47-3 (4WDL) Always Below 1 Ω
        B45-1 or F47-3 (4WDL) - Body ground Always 100 kΩ or higher

        (to Transfer Indicator Switch (L4 position))

        If the result is not as specified, repair or replace the harness or connector.

    4. Check the transfer indicator switch (neutral position).

      1. Disconnect the B46 transfer indicator switch (neutral position) connector.
      2. Disconnect the F47 4 wheel drive control ECU connector.
      3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        B46-1 - F47-12 (NP) Always Below 1 Ω
        B46-1 or F47-12 (NP) - Body ground Always 100 kΩ or higher

        (to Transfer Indicator Switch (Neutral Position))

        If the result is not as specified, repair or replace the harness or connector.

  5. INSPECT A.D.D. ACTUATOR (DIFFERENTIAL VACUUM ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY) 
    1. Check the harness and connector (A.D.D. actuator (differential vacuum actuator assembly) - 4 wheel drive control ECU).
      1. Disconnect the D1 A.D.D. actuator (differential vacuum actuator assembly) connector.
      2. Disconnect the F46 and F47 4 wheel drive control ECU connectors.
      3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        D1-1 (DM1) - F46-2 (DM1) Always Below 1 Ω
        D1-2 (DM2) - F46-6 (DM2) Always Below 1 Ω
        D1-3 (ADD) - F47-2 (ADD) Always Below 1 Ω
        D1-4 (GND) - Body ground Always Below 1 Ω
        D1-5 (DL2) - F47-9 (DL2) Always Below 1 Ω
        D1-6 (DL1) - F47-8 (DL1) Always Below 1 Ω
        D1-1 (DM1) or F46-2 (DM1) - Body ground Always 100 kΩ or higher
        D1-2 (DM2) or F46-6 (DM2) - Body ground Always 100 kΩ or higher
        D1-3 (ADD) or F47-2 (ADD) - Body ground Always 100 kΩ or higher
        D1-5 (DL2) or F47-9 (DL2) - Body ground Always 100 kΩ or higher
        D1-6 (DL1) or F47-8 (DL1) - Body ground Always 100 kΩ or higher

        (to A.D.D. Actuator (Differential Vacuum Actuator Assembly))

        If the result is not as specified, repair or replace the harness or connector.

    2. Check the limit switch.
      1. Connect lines via a relay as shown in the illustration and check that the actuator fork moves from the free to the lock position.
        NOTE:
        • Make sure to perform this inspection with the actuator removed from the vehicle. If this inspection is performed with the actuator installed to the vehicle, the actuator will be damaged.
        • When inspecting the actuator, make sure to operate it with the lines connected via a relay. If the lines are not connected via a relay and battery voltage is directly applied to the actuator, the actuator will be damaged.

        HINT: 

        When performing the operation described above, use the relay.

      2. After the free to lock position is complete, inspect the A.D.D. detection switch and limit switch.

        Standard Resistance

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        3 (ADD) - 4 (GND) After free to lock position is complete Below 12.5 Ω
        5 (DL2) - 4 (GND) Below 12.5 Ω
        6 (DL1) - 4 (GND) 0.5 MΩ or higher

        If the result is not as specified, replace the A.D.D. actuator (differential vacuum actuator assembly). If the A.D.D. actuator (differential vacuum actuator assembly) is normal, replace the 4 wheel drive control ECU.

      3. Connect lines via a relay as shown in the illustration and check that the actuator fork moves from the lock to the free position.
        NOTE:
        • Make sure to perform this inspection with the actuator removed from the vehicle. If this inspection is performed with the actuator installed to the vehicle, the actuator will be damaged.
        • When inspecting the actuator, make sure to operate it with the lines connected via a relay. If the lines are not connected via a relay and battery voltage is directly applied to the actuator, the actuator will be damaged.

        HINT: 

        When performing the operation described above, use the relay.

      4. After the lock to free position is complete, inspect the A.D.D. detection switch and limit switch.

        Standard Resistance

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        3 (ADD) - 4 (GND) After lock to free position is complete 0.5 MΩ or higher
        5 (DL2) - 4 (GND) 0.5 MΩ or higher
        6 (DL1) - 4 (GND) Below 12.5 Ω

        If the result is not as specified, replace the A.D.D. actuator (differential vacuum actuator assembly). If the A.D.D. actuator (differential vacuum actuator assembly) is normal, replace the 4 wheel drive control ECU.
