On-Vehicle Inspection [11/2016 - ]: Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 Toyota Highlander, 2018 Toyota Highlander, and 2017 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. CHECK COOLING FAN SYSTEM
    1. Check and ensure the following conditions:
      1. The ignition switch is off.
      2. The engine coolant temperature is less than 95°C (203°F).
      3. The battery voltage is between 11 to 14 V.
      4. The A/C switch is off.
    2. Connect the pickup of a clamp-on ammeter around either of the 2 wires for the cooling fan motor.
    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and wait for approximately 10 seconds. Check that the cooling fans are not operating.
    4. Start the engine. Check that the cooling fans are not operating with the engine idling.

      HINT:

      • Make sure that the engine coolant temperature is less than 95°C (203°F).
      • Turn the A/C switch off.
    5. Check that the cooling fans operate when the A/C switch is turned on.

      HINT:

      • Adjust the air conditioning control to the maximum setting.
      • Adjust the blower speed to the high setting.
    6. Measure the current while the cooling fan motors are operating.

      Standard Current

      Item Condition Specified Condition
Cooling fan motor LH Battery voltage applied at 20°C (68°F) 11.5 to 17.5 A
Cooling fan motor RH 11.5 to 17.5 A

      HINT:

Make sure that the engine coolant temperature is less than 95°C (203°F).

    7. Check that the cooling fans operate when the engine coolant temperature sensor connector is disconnected.
    8. Measure the current while the cooling fan motors are operating.

      Standard Current

      Item Condition Specified Condition
Cooling fan motor LH Battery voltage applied at 20°C (68°F) 11.5 to 17.5 A
Cooling fan motor RH 11.5 to 17.5 A
    9. After the engine is warmed up, check that the cooling fans operate as shown in the illustration.
