Vehicle Speed Signal Circuit: Procedure

  1. CHECK NO. 3 JUNCTION BLOCK 
    1. Disconnect the No. 3 junction block connector.

    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      3A-53 - Body ground Power switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V
      3A-65 - Body ground
      3A-77 - Body ground

    NG → See step   8 

    OK: Go to next step 

  2. CHECK NO. 3 JUNCTION BLOCK 
    1. Disconnect the No. 3 junction block connector.

    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      3B-5 - Body ground Power switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V
      3B-53 - Body ground
      3B-65 - Body ground

    NG → See step   12 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (INPUT VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the combination meter assembly connector.

    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      E19-39 (+S) - Body ground Power switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V

      (to Combination Meter Assembly)

    NG → See step   6 

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (OUTPUT VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the brake booster with master cylinder assembly (skid control ECU) connector.

    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      A19-11 (SP1) - Body ground Power switch on (IG) 11 to 14 V

      (to Brake Booster with Master Cylinder Assembly [Skid Control ECU])

    NG → See step   7 

    OK: Go to next step 

  5. CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (SPEED SIGNAL) 
    1. Remove the combination meter assembly with the connector(s) still connected. Refer to REMOVAL .

    2. Connect an oscilloscope to terminal E19-38 (SI) and body ground.
    3. Check the signal waveform according to the condition(s) in the table below.
      MEASUREMENT CONDITION

      Item Condition
      Tester Connection E19-38 (SI) - Body ground
      Tool Setting 5 V/DIV., 20 ms/DIV.
      Vehicle Condition Driving at approximately 20 km/h (12 mph)

      OK

      The waveform displayed is as shown in the illustration.

      HINT: 

      When the system is functioning normally, one wheel revolution generates 4 pulses. As the vehicle speed increases, the width indicated by (A) in the illustration narrows.

  6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY - NO. 3 JUNCTION BLOCK) 
    1. Disconnect the E19 combination meter assembly connector.
    2. Disconnect the 3A No. 3 junction block connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E19-39 (+S) - 3A-17 Always Below 1 Ω
      E19-39 (+S) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → REPLACE NO. 3 JUNCTION BLOCK 

  7. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY - BRAKE BOOSTER WITH MASTER CYLINDER ASSEMBLY [SKID CONTROL ECU]) 
    1. Disconnect the E19 combination meter assembly connector.
    2. Disconnect the A19 brake booster with master cylinder assembly (skid control ECU) connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E19-38 (SI) - A19-11 (SP1) Always Below 1 Ω
      E19-38 (SI) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   16 

  8. SYSTEM CHECK 
    1. Select the circuit for which voltage was not as specified in the previous step.
      RESULT

      Tester Connection ECU that Uses the Circuit Proceed to
      3A-53 - Body ground Telematics transceiver (DCM) A
      3A-65 - Body ground Tire pressure warning ECU B
      3A-77 - Body ground Power management control ECU C

  9. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (NO. 3 JUNCTION BLOCK - TELEMATICS TRANSCEIVER [DCM]) 
    1. Disconnect the 3A No. 3 junction block connector.
    2. Disconnect the E122 telematics transceiver (DCM) connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      3A-53 - E122-10 (SPDP) Always Below 1 Ω
      3A-53 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   20 

  10. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (NO. 3 JUNCTION BLOCK - TIRE PRESSURE WARNING ECU) 
    1. Disconnect the 3A No. 3 junction block connector.
    2. Disconnect the E56 tire pressure warning ECU connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      3A-65 - E56-2 (SPD) Always Below 1 Ω
      3A-65 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   19 

  11. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (NO. 3 JUNCTION BLOCK - POWER MANAGEMENT CONTROL ECU) 
    1. Disconnect the 3A No. 3 junction block connector.
    2. Disconnect the E117 power management control ECU connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      3A-77 - E117-14 (SPDI) Always Below 1 Ω
      3A-77 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   17 

  12. SYSTEM CHECK 
    1. Select the circuit for which voltage was not as specified in the previous step.
      RESULT

      Tester Connection ECU that Uses the Circuit Proceed to
      3B-5 - Body ground Vehicle approaching speaker controller A
      3B-53 - Body ground Navigation receiver assembly B
      3B-65 - Body ground Main body ECU (Instrument panel junction block assembly) C

  13. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (NO. 3 JUNCTION BLOCK - VEHICLE APPROACHING SPEAKER CONTROLLER) 
    1. Disconnect the 3B No. 3 junction block connector.
    2. Disconnect the E113 vehicle approaching speaker controller connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      3B-5 - E113-6 (SPD) Always Below 1 Ω
      3B-5 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   21 

  14. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (NO. 3 JUNCTION BLOCK - NAVIGATION RECEIVER ASSEMBLY) 
    1. Disconnect the 3B No. 3 junction block connector.
    2. Disconnect the E119 navigation receiver assembly connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      3B-53 - E119-17 (SPD) Always Below 1 Ω
      3B-53 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   22 

  15. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (NO. 3 JUNCTION BLOCK - MAIN BODY ECU [INSTRUMENT PANEL JUNCTION BLOCK ASSEMBLY]) 
    1. Disconnect the 3B No. 3 junction block connector.
    2. Disconnect the IC main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      3B-65 - IC-8 (SPD) Always Below 1 Ω
      3B-65 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → REPLACE MAIN BODY ECU (INSTRUMENT PANEL JUNCTION BLOCK ASSEMBLY) 

  16. REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  17. REPLACE POWER MANAGEMENT CONTROL ECU. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  18. REPLACE BRAKE BOOSTER WITH MASTER CYLINDER ASSEMBLY (SKID CONTROL ECU). Refer to  REMOVAL 
  19. REPLACE TIRE PRESSURE WARNING ECU. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  20. REPLACE TELEMATICS TRANSCEIVER (DCM). Refer to  REMOVAL 
  21. REPLACE VEHICLE APPROACHING SPEAKER CONTROLLER. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  22. REPLACE NAVIGATION RECEIVER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL
